first alert neighborhood. meteorologist krystal klei is tracking the forecast this morning. >> hi, guys. we are still under this first alert for the dangerous cold in place. if you had to step outside yo yesterday, you know you were quickly out and back in because it was just painful that air when it hits you. today, basically a repeat of what we saw yesterday. so the first alert for the entire area going to last all the way through tomorrow morning. i may extend this past 8:00 a.m., but the point is we're showing you through tomorrow morning what you are feeling now is what you are going to get. just ruthless cold air. and that cold air can be dangerous if you are outside for as little as 30 minutes, that's when frostbite can set in. those feels like temperatures below 5 to 25 degrees below zero. this is very, very cold conditions that we are talking about. and it's not going to let up any time soon. take a look at the feels like temperatures as they are right now. 10 below in reading, as well as lancaster, 11 below in allentown, 9 below in millville and 7 degrees below zero in atlantic city. the worst off mt. pocono where it feels 23 below. here's why. some of those wind gusts still fairly strong. about 24 miles per hour for the gusts in allentown. 20 coatesville, mt. holly and wildwood gusts of 23 miles per hour. these gusts, they don't let up today. we'll talk more about the winds, the feels like temperatures through your saturday coming up in a few minutes. new this morning, forced out into the cold, but not for long. a gas leak in west philadelphia led to evacuations along hobart street earlier this morning. first responders and septa bus helped keep evacuated residents warm while pgw found the leak. crews later gave the all-clear. everyone is now back inside their homes. talk about rude awakening, more than 100 families in montgomery county without electricity on this bitter cold morning when a car crashed right into a power pole. it happened here sections routes 309 and 202 in montgomery township. the dark spot in this video from our traffic camera is the neighborhood without power. pico tells us only 5 homes are still affected and the power should be back on by noon today. this morning we're learning the deep freeze has turned deadly. police tell us a man in cumberland county died because of exposure to bitter cold temperatures. officers found him thursday in the snow in an empty parking lot. no two ways about it this brutal blast of arctic air is dangerous. especially for anybody who has to stand outside waiting for the bus or train. >> nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live near 30th street station in university city. good morning, randy. >> reporter: hey, good morning. in terms of signs of life, we're not seeing much. this is actually one of the mega bus stops. we're seeing a few people pulling up to the left here. a lot of them taking taxi or uber, might be worth the expense today instead of walking. over here is 30th street station. we are seeing a few people start to meander over there. saw one guy bicycle, a few totally bundled up walking over. if we zoom and show you the american flags tharks is the concern. the windchill is at negative 10 right now as you saw krystal forecasting. that's only expected to get worse over the next day. tomorrow morning could be even colder. so in the next two hours we're going to try to chat with some people who are out here in the cold. a lot of people waiting on buses. most people inside today if you can stay inside at all costs, please do that. for now live at 30th around the clock to clear every street. some crew members have even been sleeping at work so they can get right back out to plow and salt the roads. if you have a problem or question about something in the city, you can always call 311. callers who flooded the line this week had mostly wanted to know when the plows would come to their street or when the trash would be picked up. let's head down the shore where folks there are bundling up as they continue to dig out from the blizzard of 2018. coastal communities were slammed with a foot of snow. yesterday's high winds only added to the misery blast. developing now, 76ers legend julius erving, dr. j., is in the hospital this morning. sixers released a statement saying he fell ill last night at the wells fargo center. you're looking at him ringing the bell. sixers expect him to be released from the hospital following a medical evaluation. julius erving is 67 years old. the basketball hall of famer was at the wells fargo center marking the 35th anniversary of his iconic dunk against the los angeles lakers. dr. j even tweeted, rock the cradle. i threw down this dunk with the sixers and it's still one of my favorites. again, julius erving went to the hospital after falling ill at the game last night. the team says he's expected to be released after he is evaluated. 5:06 right now on this saturday. this morning, a delivery driver is in the hospital after being shot during an argument. it happened last night right outside the takka grill and shrimpies restaurant. the driver is listed in stable condition. police say it's a miracle because the shooter fired at police length range at the stomach. investigators are now looking for that gunman. we have new details about a mass exodus from the philadelphia district attorney's office. more than two dozen assistant d.a.s left their jobs yesterday after they were asked to resign immediately. nbc10 has learned those requests came from new district attorney sworn in this week. our cameras captured employees carrying boxes out yesterday. prosecutors who left took years of experience with them. also, many of those lawyers were right in the middle of high profile cases. several of them told nbc10 they feel terribly for the families of the murder victims with whom they've been working. the d.a.'s office says he's keeping his campaign promise of change by making into his living room. welcome back. i'm first alert meteorologist krystal klei. let's look ahead over the next handful of days because i think you're going to like the trend you see. today, still under dangerous cold feeling below zero for most, if not all of the day yet again across the board. so this is going to be another one of those rough ones. we're staying indoors all day long if possible. really is the best plan of action. monday we're looking at a messy mix possible. this will be monday evening it looks like snow, sleet, freezing rain all possible to mix into the forecast as we go monday night into early tuesday. here's the good news, once that system passes, we're talking a january thaw with 50s returning to the forecast as we roll into next week. if you want to take a peek, it's at the bottom of your screen. right now look at the numbers across the region. i mean, they're just all ruthless. you see below zero for the actual temperature in areas like minneapolis. chicago it's zero. detroit 2 below. and in philly we're just at 9 degrees for the actual temperature. this is just a huge area of cold air that's been gripping the region. look at the feels like for today. this is why it's best to stay indoors. while there will be sunshine again today 11 below to start. 4 below at lunchtime. 1 below at 6:00 p.m. there's really no improvement as we stay below the zero line. in the suburbs 5 below at lunchtime. that's the same deal in the lehigh valley. so a very similar across the board. 2 below in delaware although we start near 10 below. in new jersey starting at 10 below and only 2 below at 6:00. and you see that same bitter cold as we go on through the jersey shore as well. this will change though as we get into next week. we're going to talk phillipsburg, new jersey, broke out around 2:00 this morning. crews battled flames shooting through the roof as well as the bitter cold. no reports of anyone hurt. the new book president trump doesn't want you to read is flying off the shelves. "fire and fury," raises questions ability the president's mental fitness for office and steve bannon attacking the president's children. the publisher rushed the book's release after mr. trump threatened legal action against its sale. on the "today" show yesterday author michael wolff defended his work which the white house calls pure fantasy. scratch after he rushed to a fire that destroyed his own home. when jason pinwell and his comrades at the tabernacle fire company got the call wednesday, he never thought he would hear his own address over the radio call. by the time they arrived the fast moving flames were just too intense. captain and his family lost everything they owned. >> knowing at 38 years old i'm starting over. four kids, wife, i've got nothing. >> it's unclear what started that fire. the community is now rallying around the penwells donate everything they can think of to help them get back on their feet. now to a follow-up about a local uber driver helping the homeless during this dangerously cold weather. earlier this week we introduced you to melinda boyer, she drives homeless to shelters for free. they donated $500 to two homeless shelters in her name. all right. let's talk more about that cold out there. if you stepped outside yesterday at all, you probably turned right back around and went inside. today's going to be a very similar day to what we saw yesterday. we're at 10 below right now in philadelphia. 8 below in pottstown. and 10 below in reading. 23 degrees below zero in mt. pocono. and negative 9 on the map for millville. these are the feels like conditions, but the actual temperatures aren't much better. most of them are single digits. and we are looking at temperatures today that will only yet again rise into the teens. let's talk about this cold stretch. the coldest since 1982. do the math that's 35 years since we've had a stretch of cold this long. today will make it 12 days that we've been below or at 33 degrees. 12 days. that is a huge stretch to be right around or below freezing. sunday's morning forecast is one degree. now, it's been teetering one degree below, one above, regardless when you're that cold the last time that we were below zero right around that territory it was 1994, so this is going to be some brutally cold air. the coldest hitting tomorrow morning. good news is that that happens when the winds die down. so the feels like temperature won't be quite as ruthless as it could potentially be. let's look at radar and satellite. nice clear picture over us right now. actually, it's pretty clear across all of new england and parts of the mid atlantic, even farther along to the west. that's the good news we don't have any systems moving our way, at least not quite yet. we're going to stay dry for your saturday and for your sunday. so the only concern really will be the brutal cold which you can combat by just staying indoors. here are the temperatures for today neighborhood by neighborhood. 14 degrees for the temperature in center city, about 16 in summerton and you can see the feels like in blue right around zero to 1 degree below. in the suburbs 14, for pottstown 15 in westchester. berlin at 14, little better at the shore. when i mean a little, i really only mean a little, stone harbor at 17. stam for delaware around 17 for the temperature this afternoon. sunny to mostly sunny conditions. again, sunshine may help a little bit, but it's those winds that cut right through you that are going to be the issue. let's talk about those winds. there are the gusts around lunchtime around 30, 35 miles per hour gusts. i think that's as high as they'll get today but still that's going to be very hard to walk outside in. and then at 6:00 winds dying down a tad, gusts to about 25 miles per hour. look though as we get tomorrow 8:00 a.m. this is why we're going to kill that first alert around tomorrow morning. it will still be very cold, but the winds won't be as strong. so that feels like will not be as dangerous as it could be. let's look at the next two days. so this is sunday into your monday that we're tracking. we'll be in the low 20s for your sunday. so that's going to be the slow start to a warmup. instead of teens, low 20s, and then by monday temperatures making their way into the 30s. but that does come with the chance late in the day of a more messy mix of rain and snow. we'll talk about that coming up in your next half hour. ♪ what a night on the ice at the ladies u.s. figure skating championships.
