Reporter well, maurice and kristine, the Pilot Program is the brainchild of public advocate tish james. She wants to harness new technology, the ability to put an air quality sensor in a lamp to make daily air quality Information Available and create an incentive for salons to improve ventilation. The way it works is the chemicals in the air it will be tied to a your electronic and it will emote certain, um, faces, a smiley face or a frown. The smiley face will indicate the air quality is fine. Reporter the public advocate talking about this device. It looks like a desk lamp but it will have a sensor to detect certain cancercausing chemicals in the air in nail salons alerting everyone, manicurists, customers and bosses, if the air quality reaches Dangerous Levels telling them they need to check the flow of air. They need have an air conditioner on. They need to open up windows. They need to wear masks. Reporter about 35 salons will get the new devices in january as part of a Pilot Program backed by the Clinton Global Initiative and funded by a private equity firm. It comes as governor cuomos new Nail Salon Enforcement Task force is handing out hundreds of violations. Since august, when it started, the task force has inspected 182 salons and handed out 901 violations, 423 for health and safety issues. Experts applaud the new Pilot Program. Reporter that woman was sue burger, a 21yearold Recovery Room nurse at albany medical center. The 3monthold in her arms a thirddegree burn patient fresh out of surgery named amanda. She was so good and, um, i time. Reporter amanda had been accidentally scalded by a steam vaporizer. This one stuck with this nurse. I remember how calm and trusting she was. And it was unusual actually for a baby so tiny coming out of surgery. She must have been in pain. Reporter that pain lasted for years through countless skin grafts and surgeries and through taunts from schoolyard bullies over her scars. Yet one thing got her through it. When i was looking through the pictures, it would just it would comfort me somehow. Reporter she has been searching for that nurse for two decades. Two weeks ago, she searched again. This time employing the help of social media. Less than 24 hours later the mystery was solved. I went to bed and woke up to a whirlwind. [ laughter ] by the time i made it into work, 9 00 in the morning, my coworkers go oh, my god youre on the news.
