Miss. Federal investigators are interviewing all four pilots who were on board, including the man reportedly at the controls when the plane made a crashlanding. According to asiana airlines, hes logged close to 10,000 hours as a pilot, but just 43 hours on the boeing 747. And it was his first time landing that type of plane at this airport. When we interview those four crewmembers, were going to get a lot more details there activities, about their work, about their training, about who was the pilot flying, who was the pilot in command. Reporter data shows the plane came in too slow and too low, before the tail hit a sea wall along the runway and broke off. Passenger ben levy thought the landing was being aborted. I thought maybe we would go back up and start flying again. But we went back down again. So it was, as i said, it felt like slow motion. Reporter family members of the two teen passengers who died are coming here in triumph. The two girls were found outside the plane. But investigators say the crash may not have been what killed one of them. Reporter autopsies are being performed to deform determine to determine if an emergency truck hit one of the girls as it raced to the scene. As you can imagine, its a very dynamic environment. Trying to rescue somewhere in the realm of 1500. Trying to piece together the cause of the accident. Reporter and autopsies on the two teens are scheduled to take place today. And already this afternoon, a representative with the San Francisco Fire Department acknowledged a safety apparatus may have actually hit one of the victims on the tarmac. Investigators say they are quite certain that weather did not play a factor in the crash. Well, we are following some breaking news here. A truck fire shuts down i95 in the city. Captain jeff long is live with more on the situation. Reporter heres a look at i 95 now. Its got a couple of lanes moving on the lefthand side here, past this tanker truck. Now, what happened here earlier today, around 3 00, apparently the brakes on the back of this tanker caught fire, causing the tires to catch fire as well. And the Fire Department arrived on scene, and they dealt with this fire. But it took them a little while to get it out. They got the fire out. And then the fire started again while we were on scene earlier today. And they put more water on it. Now, a Baltimore City Fire Department is on scene, hazmat is on scene. And we just saw the wrecker show up. So theyre beginning to get this truck out of the way here pretty soon. Like i say, only two lefthand lanes getting by. Reporter Defense Attorneys for George Zimmerman are attacking prosecution assertions that Trayvon Martin is the one yelling for help on that 911 call, the night he was shot and killed. Susan mcginnis reports from the courthouse in sanford, florida. Reporter the defense called several friends of George Zimmerman. Each one took the stand. The defense claims the neighborhood watchman shot Trayvon Martin in selfdefense after the teen attacked him. But the family of martin believes it was his. Reporter during cross examination, prosecutors pointed out that Sondra Osterman wrote a book about the case, with the proceeds going to George Zimmerman. They spent thousands, buying zimmerman clothing for the trial and supporting his defense fund. Since you contributed on his behalf, you want to believe it is George Zimmerman, correct . It is George Zimmerman. Zimmermans best friend said he helped choose the gun. He said to buy the weapon because it could be fired easily if he needed to defend himself. In sanford, florida. Zimmerman faces life in prison if convicted. Baltimore county Police Arrest a man for murder on the 4th of july. Police say 45yearold seiko harris stabbed Antoine Harris thursday. They believe it centers around a woman. Harris is being held without bail right now. Well, wjz is learning more about a motorcycle accident that killed a member of the ravens coed stunt cheerleading team. 27yearold deon bag bee died on frederick when a volkswagen made a turn in front of him. Bagbys motorcycle hit the passengers side of the car. He was selected as a member of the ravens coed stunt team in march. Take a look at the scene along liberty road, where construction crews are working out in these difficult conditions. At least they are in a bit of shade there. Not much, though. Not the case for this landscaper in north baltimore. With a lawn mower, hes out there. And in steamy conditions. And a live look outside now. However, this storm, as you can see, our spaghetti model is showing a pathway, likely moving up the atlantic seaboard. The city issued the first code red alert of the season. With prolonged highheat days is that the risk for Health Consequences goes up. Reporter when its this hot, any Outdoor Activities can be dangerous. In howard county, last week marked the first heatrelated death. And Health Leaders say code red is all about letting people know they have to change their habits. Reporter code red is a way for us to signal we need to alter our habits. So code red reminds people to stay cool. Stay hydrated, stay in touch. Reporter in baltimore, in arlington, two babies died in two separate incidents, after being left in a hot vehicle. Even if its not a code red day, the heat builds up in cars. And unfortunately, we see tragedies like we saw recently. One of them, a Maryland Department of Transportation Authority police vehicle. Looks like it may have been involved in traffic stop prior to the accident. But four vehicles, cutting off all but two lanes. Traffic squeezing by on the righthand side. The condition of teresa heinzkerry, the wife of secretary of state john kerry, is improving. Jessica has the latest on her health. Reporter teresa heinzkerry is in fair condition after being upgraded from critical. She was first taken from her nantucket home to a regional hospital. She is undergoing further evaluation. A spokesperson released a statement that her family is with her, and they are all touched by the outpouring of well wishes. According to reports, heinz kerry had symptoms consistent with a seizure. She was treated for Breast Cancer in 2009. All right, jessica, thank you. And heinzkerry is the heir to the heinz ketchup fortune. How is the rush hour shaping up so far . For all of those people on 95, not so good. Lets check in with Kristy Breslin at traffic control. Definitely a rocky start out there for everyone on 95. And it doesnt help that these accidents are pretty close in location. Lets go to one on southbound 95, around 3 00 today, we had a tanker that caught fire. And the problem there is that we have two of the left lanes blocked off. Only two right lanes getting by at this time. So you can expect a significant delay. The best way to get around that would be to take 295 at this point. Also, for northbound 95, we have another accident there, approaching hanover street. A lot of activity in that direction as well. Expect significant delays. Right now, theyre going back to 895. Other accidents that we have this afternoon, in westminster. 97, closed between old hanover road and cemetery lane. We also had liberty road at offet road, closed due to a crash. As far as delays go, another part of 95 that is going to be a problem this afternoon. Some slow traffic there, from 32 past 100. And as far as the beltway goes, on the west side inner loop, just stop and go there, past 70. Top side inner loop, not doing too bad. Just a minor slowdown as you make your way towards Dulaney Valley road. Lets take a look at traffic there. Heavy traffic there. Because of both accidents, thats 95 south of caton avenue. Dozens of people are missing after a train derails and explodes in canada, just 10 mights from the u. S. Border. At least five are dead. Mike armstrong has the latest on this disaster. Reporter fires continue to smolder two days after a massive fire, caused by a train derailment, all but destroyed the heart of this picturesque town of 6,000. It looks like a war zone here. A large part of the downtown has been destroyed. It is just really terrible. Theres been loss of life as we know it. Parked near quebec. The conductor says he secured the trains brakes before going to a hotel for the night. Company Officials Say it appears the cars became loose and rolled seven miles downhill. The train derailed and exploded. The giant fireball flattened. Much of the small downtown around 1 00 in the morning. I lost everything. I dont have nobody here. Reporter the cause of the accident remains unknown. But in a statement, the montreal main and atlantic rail company, said that the train was parked overnight, running. But the engine was shut down, subsequent to the departure of the engineer, who had handled the train but may have resulted in the release of the air brakes. At least 30 buildings have been destroyed. And Officials Say it may be days before the extent of the damage is realized. Now, about a third of the community of 6,000 was forced from their homes by the explosion and the flames. Well, for the first time, we are hearing from the sole survivor of that elite firefighting unit, killed by a raging wildfire in arizona. Mary is in the newsroom with more on what he has to say. Reporter brendan mcdonogh took to the stage for a fundraiser for the victims of the fire. The 19 other firefighters became trapped and then died when the fire suddenly shifted direction. Mcdonogh says the community thanked the community for rallying around them. Not only the town but a nation all coming together. And i want to say thank you and i love every single one of you. It touches my heart. Because my heart goes out for him. I cant imagine what he feels. Reporter the Arizona Diamondbacks presented mcdonogh with a donation of 400,000 for the families of those fallen firefighters. Denise, back to you. Thank you very much, mary. And that wildfire has since been contained. Federal investigators remain on the scene of that horrible plane crash in San Francisco. So far, they have determined asiana airlines, flight 214, was traveling significantly below the speed it should have been during its approach. The crew tried to abort just before it smashed into the runway. Amazingly, of the 307 people on board, only two died. Terrell brown reports for wjz on the role science and engineering played in saving lives. Reporter it could be a miracle that only two people died on asiana 214. Or could it also be physics . The plane crashed while attempting to land, which meant it was flying low and slow. If it was going at a much faster rate, there could have been more of an impact force that might have actually pulled that aircraft apart. Reporter it was an approach and landing crash, the most common kind. Just three months ago, this lion air, boeing 737, smashed into the Pacific Ocean other during a landing in bally, indonesia. In 2008, a british airways, boeing 737, touched down short of a runway at Londons Heathrow airport. And in 2005, an air france air bus, a340 crashed and caught fire. In all three crashes, there were zero fatalities. If were creating miracles every day, you could call it that. But really, this is due to the fact of good Design Engineering and great crews there to evacuate the airplanes. Reporter despite the tremendous forces of impact, the fuselages of these airplanes stayed largely intact. That was by design. Plane interiors were also designed with safety in mind. Seats dont come loose during a crash. And it buys passengers time in case of a fire. In fact, now, they are designed so that even if half the exits are blocked, everyone can get out in 90 seconds. We are now trained that if this were to happen in new york or paris or london, you would see the same response. Reporter terrell brown, new york. Reporter now, during the descent, the pilots never discussed a problem with the plane or its positioning until it was too late. Baltimore police are looking at a deadly stabbing at a bar in arbutus. The flight broke out at the fish head cantina. When officers arrived, they found john bowman of hale thorpe, suffering several stab wounds am he died after being rushed to the hospital. Police are interviewing several witnesses. So far, they have made no arrests. An unusual barricade situation for police in anne arundel county. That they say this man, david rupert, was in his mothers home. And was wanted on outstanding warrants. A Tactical Team was called in and rupert became combative. He was subdued with a taser and now faces a number of charges. Well, dozens of People Killed in protest in egypt. And the military and supporters of the countrys former president , both blame the other side for the violence. Danielle nottingham reports for wjz from washington. Supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi prayed. And protested in cairo, after a deadly confrontation with Egyptian Police and soldiers. Military coup. But you can expect slow traffic back from the tunnel. As far as northbound 95 goes. We still have the accident on hanover street, involving four vehicles. Two right lanes are blocked. Expect significant delays back to the beltway. In westminster, 97 remains closed between old hanover and cemetery lane. Use halter road as your alternate. Other accidents around the region. Perring parkway at the beltway. Liberty. North bradford at east bitdz. And as far as the delays around the beltway go, on the top side inner lop, slows down from charles street to Dulaney Valley road. West side inner loop, slight delay there. Lets take a live look. Two years ago, an earthquake closed the Washington Monument to visitors. Starting at sunset tonight, the Washington Monument will glow blue. It took five months to do it. But scaffolding totally encloses all of the Washington Monument. Its necessary to repair damage. Ranger Nicollette Williams brought tourists down from the top. It was absolutely terrifying. It was shaking so violently, to have the mortar falling on your head. The fear was so high that i was sure that we were under attack. I didnt realize at first that it was an earthquake. Reporter its been closed to tours ever since. Although its still news to a lot of tourists. No, i actually just heard about this. He told me about it. Came all the way from georgia. They came from new jersey. So we were kind of disappointed a little bit. We understand theyre disappointed. And we wanted to make it a little better looking than just scaffolding. Reporter so the park service commission, the special blue trim in the pattern of the monument. Starting at sunset, 480 lights behind the scrim will turn on. They had sort of a blue taft. And its going to be pretty. Reporter a kind of lemonade from the scene. But the monument is pretty impressive on its own. I told my wife, the picture of it with scoff scaffolding might be more impressive than without it. Reporter some of these cracked go all the way through the marble. So if theyre going to inject epoxy, they have to make sure they have one person on one side and one on the other so they make sure it doesnt come out and stain the stone. Because theyre culturally and historically significant. So we want to get this right. The monuments blue lights will turn on every night at sunset, through next winter. It happened in melbourne, australia. Police say the woman was backing out of a super market marking lot when she hit another car. She then accelerated into the front of the store. About 20 people were in the store at the time of the crash. But no one was injury. A 20yearold central iowa man is found alive in montana in morn a week. He was doing research for a book. After failing to call home, his family became worried. He turned up at a gas station. He said he was staying at a park and told a friend to call, but the friend forgot. He says he plans to get home, hitch hiking and train hopping once again. Its been nearly seven months since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in connecticut. The tragedy took place about 70 miles from Yankees Stadium in new york city. The yankees are making sure the victims and those who have are not forgotten. Rather moist atmosphere. But about 5 or 6 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. Most places were 90 plus. Today, only in the 80s. Just about normal. Normal high is about 87. Right now, were only at 84 degrees. Take a look at that number now. The dew point has actually come down to 65. It was high earlier. And winds now, the southwest at 10. Barometer holding steady. 30. 05 inches. Currently, a pleasant 73 in oakland. 82, cumberland. The warmest place i could find, ocean city, away from the beach. 87. And 87 in d. C. There have been a couple of showers east of the city. One close to elkton. They are down to 38. Temperaturewise, in oakland area. Upper 70s to 80s. Normal high is around 87. So we actually came in one or two degrees below average. Kind of a nice breeze up in elkton. With that thunderstorm just passing them. Theres one storm just east of the edgewood area. Moving up toward portions of cecil county and northern county. May see that shortly. Southwest winds here at 10. Most have more of a westerly flow around the region. Still moisture around the west. A lot of rain near chicago today. We have another batch of widely scattered shower activity in the ohio valley. Looks like tomorrow, again, a chance of an afternoon shower or thundershower. I think a better chance comes wednesday and thursday with this system that is going to move across the ohio valley. It will give us, with a funnel system approaching, a better chance of thunderstorm activity. And could be locally strong. Maybe by thursday. Overnight tonight, still on the humid side for sure. Cooler air, believe it or not. Were actually going to go below normal for a couple of days by the end of the week. But well have to deal with thunderstorm activity as well. Quick look at the tropics.
