[ no audio ] . >> reporter: gunfire tore through the streets of brooklyn just afternoon yesterday. a shooting that has residents upset. >> i feel like i'm in a war zone. that is what i feel. i feel like i'm in a war zone and it is out of control. >> reporter: police say a man opened fire on two people. a man and woman. police responded and chased the shooter for three blocks before shooting him in the torso. people in brooklyn are fed up. >> what has to happen before they do something? do they have to have 10 people shot? >> reporter: this is brooklyn's 7th shooting in the past two months. the police commissioner says his officers are doing the best they can and that the community needs to step up. >> people aren't getting shot with lightning bolts. this is not a scene out of "x- men." these guys have guns in their houses. they load their magazines. they play with their guns. and people know it. their families know it. their girlfriends know it. other people know it. >> sometimes the cops get overzealous, but, you know, i hate to say it, but some of these guys bring it on themselves with what they are doing. [ no audio ] >> thank you. it is the 22nd person shot by baltimore city police this year. the third police-involved shooting in the past week and a half. a man is rushed to the hospital this morning after a fire at the dukes motel on pulaski highway. he is severely burned in the burn center. still no charges this morning in the hit-and-run accident that killed 62-year- old james little, jr. police say a 20-year-old driver fled the scene, but they found her minutes later and she smelled of alcohol. the dead man's sister is looking for justice this morning. >> she is 20 years of age. she knows from right and wrong. we have to stand justice for what we do. she choose to do the wrong thing to drink behind the wheel. >> police are taking their time filing charges on the case. baltimore city police will not reopen the investigation into the death of a northern virginia teenager. annie mccann was found dead at the perkins home last year. the family wants police to look at the case again, but the police will not do so. police say mccann died from a bactine overdose. mccann was using it for her newly pierced ears. mccann's parents think something else was responsible for her death or someone else. on capitol hill, senate majority leader harry reid is confident that a healthcare reform bill could pass before christmas. >> i'm confident that we will be on the way to bring the bill to the president. >> reid must settle issues between senators. this morning, it appears democrats have abandoned the public option and medicare expansion. and joe lieberman says the bill will not pass unless liberals are won over. >> you have to take out the medicare buy in. you have to forget about the public option. you have to take out the class act. that is a new entitlement program and it will put us further into deficit. months ago, leberman supported the coverage. getting out of -- joe lieberman supported the coverage. getting out of debt. wells fargo is paying back the federal government. banks have been eager to pay back the funds to get the bonuses back. and the new year is expected to be a good one for area retailers. baltimore business journal ranks baltimore number two in the nation to see retail growth in 2010. the reason for the ranking is according to attract high end stores. the ravens are getting into the holiday spirit. kai jackson has more on the ravens generous off the field effort yesterday. >> reporter: several baltimore ravens scored big points today. this was no game. it was a genuinely generous effort to help those in need. >> i'm giving back to the community and to the kids of belmont elementary school. >> reporter: on sunday, the ravens played hard and won big against the detroit lions. monday night, several players gave their time and attention to young people. >> who do you see today? >> 1898 to 1978. it grew into the mass entertainment complex with two movies and stage shows and rock bands and big bands. the diving bell and the diving horse for about $2. >> that is the rolling stones, by the way. >> 1966. >> performing at the steel pier. >> the diving horse was iconic. this lasted from 40 feet? >> 40 feet up. the horse would driveway young woman. a -- would dive with a young woman. >> can you imagine being the person on the back of the horse? it is so iconic, you actually -- here it is. >> this is my diving horse i bring with me. >> look at that. unbelievable. the denver broncos play the baltimore ravens. it became a symbol of the steel pier. >> all you saw was the diving horse on all the billboards. from philadelphia driving down the roads to atlantic city. >> you mentioned as a kid, you got inn fat waited -- you got infatuated with it? >> yes. i found unbelievable stories. abbott and costello started out with the menstril shows. it was everywhere. it was famous on the steel pier. abbott and costello did not use black face. they used the "who's on first" routine. they came back to steel pier. >> was salt water taffy invented on the steel pier? >> no. atlantic city. the rumor was the salt water ruined the taffy. >> 1911. the official program. >> i'll tell you, it was amazing. all the big bands played there. the baltimore connection was the marine ball room. there was a neon flag above the stage. that flag is hanging at lexington market right now. you look up and see a lit up neon flag. a man by the name of bob grassiosi from reisterstown got it and brought it back here and rehabbed it and loaned to lexington market. it is one of the few flags remaining. it is hanging at lexington market. >> i want to say how well this book has been received. it is the coffee table book. we love doing these at this time of year. you may know someone. your aunt or uncle who may have been there. it may be a great present. >> people who have seen this love this. it brings back so many memories. it resonates so many feelings if you have been there. >> and we will bring it closer. at one time, atlantic city was the family resort of the east coast. ocean city is the family resort of the northeast coast right now. atlantic city fell on hard times and tarnished its image a bit. how long did it take you to do this?
