A tropical alert huge and ominous Hurricane Matthew creating chaos in the caribbean while eyeing a possible hit on our coast. Hurricane matthew in the caribbean right now but were already getting ready for the storm in North Carolina. Good evening, im tisha powell. And im steve daniels. cuba and haiti are in the path right now. And it could bring devastation and matthew could end up here by the weekend. So, governor mccrory declared a state of emergency for the entire abc 11 viewing area. A total of 66 counties are under that order. The Emergency Operations center is activated. And preparations are underway out of an abundance of caution. Officials are urging all of us to get emergency kits ready with flashlights. Water. And non perishable food. While all eyes will be on major Hurricane Matthew cutting a destruction across haiti and eastern cuba during the next couple of days, our weather in Central North Carolina will be on the quiet side. High pressure will provide some sunshine today, and tomorrow, and no rain will fall. The only weather issue can be patchy fog early each day and some clouds in the be a few degrees either side of 80 today and tomorrow, with tonights readings falling to near 60. At this time, the second half of the workweek will be dry as well. A light flow of air from the northeast may bring in moisture off the atlantic at times, so the amount of clouds versus sunshine is a bit uncertain in the wednesday through friday period. Now, on to matthew the 5 pm advisory is in from the National Hurricane center and its a bit concer has shifted west, bringing the hurricane very close to the south coast of North Carolina by saturday afternoon. Computer models are now forecasting that a ridge of High Pressure will shove the hurricane to the northwest for a longer period of time, before a trough of low Hurricane Matthew hits North Carolina. Thats why state leaders and others are getting ready now. Joel brown joins us live in raleigh with more on whats being done. That latest storm track put duke energy on alert, tonight. Whether matthew wobbles our way or not. Duke says its preparing for a major power outage event. While matthew hammers the caribbean. Storm nats. Meterologists at duke energy are glued to the hurricane will strike next. And have to plan for the possibility, matthews heading for us. We have sophisticated systems that can take the weather forecasts that were seeing and actually develop a modeling scenario to determine the expected outages where theyll be most likely concentrated. Those models help determine. How many outoftown crews duke will call in to help restore power. And estimate how many of us will be in the dark. The states Largest Energy provider hasnt had to prepare for this kind of potential storm, in since weve seen a category 3. Thats in the fran category, if you will, so its a sizeable storm. At the states Emergency Operations center in west raleigh. Well, he we go again. Governor mccrory activated the eoc, monday. Declaring a state of emergency in 66 counties. The triangle and the sandhills all included. The governor says he hopes the declaration helps farmers expedite their harvests. Of crops already hard hit by the september storms. I am hoping this is a false alarm but we cant gamble. So the states Emergency Operations teams is aiming to have all of its resources, medical, national guard, Highway Patrol. On the honor roll. She was a freshman at unc pembroke. She came home for the weekend to be with family and friends. Not knowing. It would be her last. She was right here right here. Lord have mercy. Tears. And forgiveness. Pouring from young man she says was her daughters best friend. The young man. Who was also behind the wheel the night her daughter died. Around nine. The Highway Patrol says the 18 year old was in the backseat. Her friend. Makel breece. Also 18. With his arm now in a sling. Was at the wheel. They were heading north here on williamswhi county. Breece ran a stop sign. And hit another car. Eyewitnesses say his car plowed through this fence. And hit a tree. Smith. Wasnt wearing her seatbelt. And was thrown from the car. And died John Thompson lives nearby 17 34 52 boom, boom, boom, just like a bomb going off. John thompson lives near the crash site. He doesnt know the family. But he was the first to lay flowers for tachina. I respect life. Tonight. His flowers are joined by more flowers. Loved tachina smith gather to pray. And lean on each other. Through this loss. And while smiths mother forgives him. Breece is charged with misdemeanor death by Motor Vehicle for not stopping at the stop sign. And we should note. That even though he failed to stop. Residents in the area says it is a dangerous intersection. So the department of transportation is planning to look into that. Student. pleading guilty to driving drunk and killing three people two years ago. But not to the most serious charges. So his trial will go on tomorrow. The guilty plea from 21 year old Chandler Kania on three counts of felony death by moter vehicle could get him 22 to 25 years in prison. If hes found guilty of Second Degree murder. Prosecutors sources close to the case say the big question now. Revolves around whether there was malice involved. Back in the summer of 2015. After a night of drinking. The then 20yearold woundup driving the wrong way on i85. And crashing into an oncoming car. Killing two adults and a child. And injuring another young child. Jury selection begins tomorrow morning in tonight fayetteville firefighters trying to figure out why there were no working smoke detectors in an apartment that caught fire this morning, trapping a woman in the flames. They say a candle left burning in the living room of a second story apartment started the fire. Other residents called 911 saying smoke was windows. 55 year old elsa lenczk was hanging out one of the window calling for help, when a guy working a block away heard the screams, saw the smoke, and ran to help her. Firefighters got to her quickly, and pulled her and her pets to safety. Another shift on i40 in raleigh tonight. eastbound traffic has now been moved onto three rebuilt lanes between lake wheeler road and south saunders street. Weather put the shift on hold. But its now complete. dot crews are now working to rebuild outside lanes along that stretch. Use new lanes along the entire 8point5 mile stretch of i40 sometime later this fall. Tonight, we join you in remembering Larry Stogner the legend who anchored newscasts from this desk for decades. Its been a sad. Difficult day. Larry passed away overnight after a courageous battle with als. Larry was considered the dean of local tv news. He was born and raised in North Carolina. And graduated from the university of North Carolina. Larry joined abc11 in 1976. And the six and 11 oclock newscasts in 1982. During his 40 years at abc 11. Larry covered every important story. From president ial primaries. To political conventions. President ial inaugurations from Ronald Reagan to barackobama. And as a vietnam veteran in the us air force. He loved to cover North Carolina troops abroad. Larry also earned a spot in the North Carolina journalism hall of fame. And the North Carolina Broadcasters Hall of fame. He was a true legend. Governor pat the stogner family this afternoon to offer his condolences. And offering his thoughts to us this afternoon. It was last year. Anchor desk. Sharing with us. And our viewers. Computer models are now forecasting that a ridge of High Pressure will shove the hurricane to the northwest for a trough of low pressure and cold front approaching from the west push the storm to the northeast. That longer northwest motion means the hurricane could get closer to the coast. Still, we have to reiterate that its still so far out, there can and probably will be changes over the next couple of days. The trough of low pressure that will eventually steer matthew is just approaching the pacific northwest. Once it gets inland the weather Balloon Network will be able to sample it, and that models that we use to forecast the hurricane. By tomorrow and wednesday, well have a little more confidence in the track forecasts. Regardless of whether Hurricane Matthew makes landfall on the eastern seaboard, there will be rough surf and rip currents along the coast as matthew progresses northward later this week.
