johnson, the man accused of killing phylicia barnes, shuffled into court with both his ankles and wrists chained. >> will january be enough time? >> we hope that it will be. >> reporter: one of johnson's attorneys, along with the state asked for a postponement until next year. the defense said there are 17,000 pages offed and none of it reveals a clear case against their client. >> i'm still trying to put it together to figure out what direction they're coming from it seems to me it's the old clea chai the -- cliche, the last person seeing it. >> reporter: it was in april that we got a glimpse into the case. police believe johnson killed his girlfriend's sister by asphyxiation, stuffed her body into a tub and disposed to it. prosecutors point to a close relationship between barnes and johnson. evidence gathered by four police agencies over a career and -- year and a half. both sides affording another four months. >> it's -- he's confident we will put on a great defense. >> reporter: the trial date is now set for january 21st of next year. that's roughly a month after the two-year anniversary of phylicia barnes' initial disapoornlts brian kuebler. the light street water active weather day tuesday and as we look west, you can see the storms flaring across the tennessee valley reaching into the great lakes. the pattern is going to be active has that cold front begins to push. this front mr. not cool us down tremendously but will bring in showers and drier hair will push in as we go toward the middle part of the week. this will drop those humid levels. i think we'll get sunshine back for a few days. we'll also look for cooler weather by next weekend. interesting disturbance here. several hundred miles off the carolina coast, but the movement of this storm and dry air into the vicinity, we don't think that will develop. a slight chance this will develop in the eastern caribbean sea south of the dominican republic. tonight 72, increasing cloud cover. more. rosie leftwich has more of the developments. >> reporter: it's been a day of discussion, gambling and duelings. here's what happened today in annapolis. lawmakers are looking at a bill that would ease the liability for landlords for tenants with dogs. basically, they said all owners would be responsible for their dog's action. that didn't sit too well with the house judiciary committee. they anticipate the courts would be filled with lawsuits from people being bitten by small dogs, larger dogs, any kind of dogs. they said there's an awful lot of work still left to do. >> the liability is -- says that a person who owns a dog and the dog bites somebody, that person is responsible. >> we just haven't vetted this enough. we haven't heard from enough people. >> reporter: there are some 18 amendments proposed for this. there will be a lot of discussions still on this probably tomorrow before this goes to the full house for a vote. at this point a house commit -- subcommittee is working on. that one of the things drawing the most discussion is whether or not where some of the profits will go if a casino opens in prince george's county. the proposal on the stable is the fact that most of that money would go to school construction in baltimore city and parks and recs in baltimore city. not every delegate seems no like that deal. in fact, one of the local delegates
