Reporter high above the city, its hard to miss, the mist rising from big silver contraptions on rooftops. And where theres steam, theres usually a cooling tower. You can see the fog when you look out on the skyline of the city. Its that mist that carries over the bacteria and thats the danger of the cooling towers. Leaving some steaming property owners, many who have been able to prove they have no cooling towers on their building, or no building on which to place a cooling tower, like at this construction site. Among the highprofile properties who successfully disputed their tickets, the health and hospitals corporation, at the forefront of the cooling tower crusade, lincoln center, the riverside church, which has just one cooling tower but got four tickets, one for each entrance. And the roosevelt house on the Upper East Side. We dont have a cooling tower, and as roosevelt also said, we have freedom from fear. One reason, the city used google maps to try to figure out who owned which towers. Samuel pack says he filed his paperwork on time, but the city lost it. They got on my case about it. I had to deal with it. Just a pain. Reporter so far, more than 260 violations have been dismissed. Fines for Public Properties have been written off, whether or not they followed the rules. He was a major photographer from the 20s into the 70s. These are his portraits. So you see andy warhol, mick jagger. Some of the people who fascinated us most. Chanel, greta garbo, audrey hepburn. Gorgeous book of photographs. Huge, oversized. It really is a cavalcade of the also, not only portraits, but pictures of london during the blitz. So there are serious photographs and also these people who you look at in new ways through beatons eyes. Cultural. Quite a range of life that all right. Up next . What do you hold in your hands . A gorgeous book called map exploring the world. Its over 300 maps of all kinds. Everything from a view of the world created by a muslim man in the 12th century to a map of disney land, to a 1937 map of the stars homes, to current maps about the infiltration of facebook and twitter in places. I mean, it is just an extraordinary book. What i love about this book is it shows you how to see the world and how people through the world and the ways to look at it but also whats so beautiful about this book is that the maps are not chronological. So youre constantly like brought upshore. You see the world as these other people saw it. Also, what is so beautiful about it is that you get a sense of the human mind. Mapping the stars homes and what that says. Then mapping the entire universe as other people tried to do. The reproductions and explanations of where these maps come from and what they are is really excellent. We love to eat. And theres a lot of good eats in new york city. I wanted to tell you about some books about new york. For gifts, savoring gotham is a riveting encyclopedia. I know that sounds like a paradox. It has over 500 entries on food cream to the three martini lunch. What chapter is that . Yeah, okay. Also, oysters, the role of oysters in new york city. You get a lot about the ethnic foods of new york. It is such a good book. Im sure there are things that you will quibble with. I was sorry not to see lundys from sheepshead bay, which is one of my old haunts growing up. I was sorry to see there wasnt an entry for that. There is one about Grand Central oyster bar. Restaurants, food stores. When are evingers went out of the business, the recipe of the cake went with it. Any you see now is an imitation. How about that. So savoring gotham is also, a book from library of america, which is a gorgeous series. 200 volumes. I love to give them at gifts. This one is the writings of fred lick law olmstead. He created Prospect Park. Just to read the plans, announcing what central park would be, what Prospect Park would be. Such beautiful writing. A picture of the 19th century mind at work. He was a great Landscape Architect but also an abolition abolitionist abolitionist. You get a sense of what life meant in the 19th century for a man who was devoted to public service. Plus, he was an excellent writer. A little about humans of new york quickly. It is such an extraordinary blog that youve seen. Pictures of thousands of new yorkers that hes taken. This is 100 of them with stories. Little interviews with them. Theyre just so touching, so revel revelatory. You look at the photographs, see the people you know on the you discover them. Homeless people, interesting people, eccentric people. Just an extraordinary book. And its hugely popular, obviously. 10 million stories in the naked city. And finally. Thing explainer. Complicated stuff in simple words. Now, i dont know if you remember here, let me give that to you. We have questions for book. Last year we talked about this wonderful book called what if, which was hypothetical questions and real answers to hypothetical questions. Now, this is a book about an elevator, which he calls a lifting room. Its about the u. S. Constitution, which he calls the u. S. Laws of the land. So he takes the 1,000, or as he said, tenhundred, most used words in the english language to explain everything from a dishwasher to a nuclear bomb. I have the feeling in reading heavily illustrated with very brief, simple to understand descriptions that it was as if i was talking to Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking as interpreted by forest gump. I love it. So it does seem like, okay, if i can understand this, anyone can. But its such a pleasure. Its like reading this weird kind of poetry. The same way forest gump seems to speak in elliptical phrases. I wanted to just say, as he says, he talks about how much you can learn from books of history and books of madeup stories. He doesnt even call them novels. So i want to say in addition to all these books, you can find books of madeup stories in bookstores. Thats how the thing explainer would tell me how to say that. Autothing ll the things connected to you in a hospital room. I always like to bring as much as possible. From the expensive to also the very inexpensive. Theres a lot of price range and subject range. Thank you. And if you have a question for bill, email him at billsbooks nbcuni. Com. You can also find a list of this weeks recommendations on our website, nbcnewyork. Com books. Thank you, bill. And coming up when today in new york returns live from new york, its saturday night.
