The walt whit man high after he didnt come home from a saturday night party. Officials say the teen died from alcohol poisoning, drowning, and hypothermia. It is tough for any parent to watch their child go through surgery. A Prince Georges County father has watched his 11yearold go through multiple surgeries in just a few weeks. And its all because of a tragic accident at a friends house. A purple heart recipient accidentally pulled the trigger while he was babysitting the boy last week. Now his father is talking about the toll the incident has taken on his family and his friend. He spoke only to news4s tracee wilkins. Reporter 11yearold [ inaudible ] spending time at the home of his neighbor. His dads good friend in suitland. My son and him, they do just about everything together. Reporter thats why mark herring was so surprised by the call he received from that friend on december 5th. My good buddy, my neighbor actually picked up the phone and shot caleb and, um, im taking him to the hospital. Reporter outside Childrens National medical center, mark talked about how his 33yearold friend and purple heart recipient quickly jumped into action. He just did everything he could possibly do from a military mind frame and got him to got him to andrews. Reporter that was the beginning of numerous heart, lung and neurosurgeries and multiple hospitals. And now at childrens. Caleb is doing better and ready to work on healing the relationship with the man he loves. The family friend who accidentally shot him. They had a little chat, you know, talked about the injury, talked about where to go from here on. My son and him is so close that, you know, my son cried. He cried. For me, the most important thing was getting both of them together and working on their relationship. Reporter with lung surgery, heart surgery, to hospitals, this has been an expensive road to recovery for caleb. Police in Prince Georges County say they havent seen a robbery like this in a long time. Two men approached two armored truck employees who were loading money into an atm in beltsville. They grabbed a large amount of cash and took off running. Darcy spencer has more on who police are looking for tonight. Im a little nervous, i mean, because i found out they had rifles. Reporter at first debbie didnt realize what she was seeing right outside her office window. Suspects who had just pulled off an armored car heist, parked their get away van in front of her. She grabbed her phone and took a picture. I was sitting right here and i saw them go by right here. Reporter looking out your window . One came and then the other one came. Reporter at least two armed suspects robbed the armored car on route 1 in beltsville. The guards were loading the atm at the time. Sources say the robbers got away with thousands of dollars. This is obviously a brazen robbery in the middle of the day. This business was open for business. We have not seen a case like this in a long time. Reporter the robbers drove right across the street and parked the van next to the office building. Multiple witnesses tell me the men got into another car that was parked on the street behind the building and got away, at least for now. We have a phenomenal closure rate. These guys are out there, were confident in our ability to catch them. Its best for them to turn themselves in. Reporter debbies car worker saw them carry something to a car on the hill. I didnt see money. I saw a black something, a coat, covering whatever they had. Reporter they pulled off the heist at 10 30 in the morning. Police tell me this crime was not only brazen, it was well planned, well orchestr. Prince georges county police are working with the fbi on this investigation. Right now they are reviewing Surveillance Video from the bank. They say they are confident they are going to make an arrest in this case. In beltsville, darcy spencer, news4. If you live near the Piedmont Golf Community in haymarket, make sure you lock your car and take it off the street if that is at all possible. Police are investigating a string of car breakins that happened around thanksgiving. A suspect stole a gun from an Unmarked Police cruiser. This is a Surveillance Video of the two guys police are looking for. Its not super clear, but if you can see it, its great. If you have any information give Virginia State police a call. This is far from the first time a weapon has been stolen from a police vehicle. News4 iteam investigation found that more than 350 firearms have been lost or stolen from l since 2011. In one of those cases an ar15, Assault Rifle was taken from Rockville Police, and the suspect was seen with the weapon near a school in kensington. Its holding a public hearing today on the graduation scandal surrounding ballou high school. An investigation by npr and wamu radio found 57 students were on track to graduate last april. But 160 kids got diplomas in june and half of the graduates missed more than three months of school. News4s derrick ward is live for us outside the Wilson Building where the hearing continues at this hour. Did it get heated, derrick . Reporter well, you know, it did get heated, but it was more passionate than heated. People are stunned by the accusations and allegations, what came out in the report. It couldn for ballou. This is the first time, again, a school has graduated its entire senior class. Every person who graduated applied to college. Again, questions about that graduation, students meeting the requirements came up. Today the city council weighed in. The report says ballou high schools 100 Graduation Rate for 2017 including students who had too many absences to graduate and werent prepared for life beyond high school. The Education Committee chair says that the council is looking at this and its not just about ballou. Ballou High Schools Community did not create their present day dilemma. It operates in an inherited Public Education system steeped in segregation in the District Of Columbia and the entire country. Reporter students, teachers and parents were among those testifying and they worry all of the progress ballou has made over the last couple of years could be canceled out by a bad perception and bad doesnt mean they missed 50 days of school. Maybe they missed a first period. Maybe they took care of a younger sibling and missed the last period. Thats some of the inaccuracies and not true telling behind it. Reporter the schools chancellor said he takes this matter personally. Are we doing enough to respond to the needs of students on the threshold of drop out and failure, particularly those who are chronically absent or carrying multiple failing grades . All of these questions and especially the last touch on the question that matters the most to me. Are we giving our students what they need to succeed . Reporter there are investigations going on into this and possible changes in the way absences are counted in the d. C. Public School System. At ballou and other schools as well. And you know, we talked to some ballou parents. They say it is a doublesided coin. On the one hand it is good this problem is being addressed if it is indeed an needs to be addressed. Its sad ballou is targeted here because they are always overcoming perceptions. Another thing students are stung by is their principal was removed over this. We are getting our first look at just how fast a fire ripped through a building in the heart of georgetown this morning. Firefighters were on scene for hours at the building on wisconsin avenue just north of adams street. You can see the flames ripping through that second and the third floors there. D. C. Fire says the flames were contained to that one building. One of the firefighters, we understand, had some minor injuries. Concern tonight from some vienna, virginia residents about a flag flying in their neighborhood. This flag has been associated with the altright movement. But the owner tells Northern Virginia bureau chief julie carey thats not why hes flying it. Reporter chances are good, most americans couldnt name these flag or explain what they stand for. This is the anarco capitalism flag and this green flag, its the flag concern. Are you familiar with kazakhstan . Reporter thats the flag owner and the kak flag represents the fictional country of kakistan. Some see it as an adaptation of the war and was used in charlottesville in the demonstrations. It is playing on the fact people in the modern day, they are very obsessed about race, and i am more interested in egalitarianism, race equality. Reporter the neighbor who called about the flag sees it differently. She didnt want to be identified, but she said the flag is offensive, even hurtful in her diverse town home community. My concern is there is somebody that ascribes to those beliefs in our neighborhood. We really we dont really agree with that and we want everybody to feel welcome and we dont want to perpetuate hate. This is the situation, from around baltimore and towards new york city. If youre driving i95 north, you really want to watch out there because it is going to be a mess from this storm. It is not a big storm, but because temperatures were so cold, even a half inch or dusting creates a problem on some roadways. Still seeing some outside now. Today the House Ethics Committee says its opened an investigation looking into Sexual Harassment claims against congressman ruben kuehne. A recent report found several students got diplomas last year who maybe shouldnt have. Schools chancellor Antoine Wilson testified and said the most important question is whether the School System is giving students all they need to succeed. It took firefighters several hours to put out this raging fire in the heart of georgetown this morning. That fire broke out in a building on wisconsin avenue just after 6 30 this morning. One firefighter suffered minor injuries. Police say a mother in rockville just admitted to shaking her bed before a nap. That little girl died three days later. News4s chris gordon has more details on why the judge wont let her bond out of jail. These facts in this case are disturbing. Reporter 31yearold rebecca is accused of murdering and abusing her two month old daughter lisana. Back on february 18th, Rockville Police responding to a 911 call from the babys father found the infant unresponsive. The infant is taken from her home to a local hospital and then transferred to a d. C. Hospital. She dies three days later. It takes seven months for the d. C. Medical examiners results, concluding the manner of death to be homicide. This week Montgomery County detectives called rebecca b rio nes in for questioning. She admitted to shaking the baby and throwing the baby on the bed. She also admitted that she had done the past. Reporter prosecutors accuse her of using repeated vigorous force on her two month old causing head and neck trauma, brain injury, fractures of the ribs and both the babys legs. Prosecutors say babies dont break in this way unless there is significant repeated force. In her north adams street neighborhood in rockville, people are surprised to hear that she is charged with killing her baby. They are very nice person, i know. They are very nice neighborhood, yeah, and they are helpful also. They are nice. Hopefully she can get some help because if youve done it before thats something that needs to be looked at. Reporter the judge is keeping her in jail for now saying that she could hurt someone else. Today in court, it was revealed that she is seven months pregnant and the judge says hes concerned about the baby shes carrying. Reporting from the Montgomery County district court, chris gordon, news4. Prince georges county Corruption Scandal pleaded guilty this afternoon. A former member of the county liquor board, he is accused of taking money from lobbyists and pushing lawmakers to vote for the countys sunday liquor sales law. He pleaded guilty to traveling to d. C. To collect the kickbacks from lobbyists. Hell be sentenced in april. Eight people, including two former state delegates, were also charged in connection with this case. Crime victims in virginia will now have a better way to get help when they need it. It comes in an app for something called vine. A life line of sorts for crime victims to monitor the status of offenders in the commonwealth. It gives them notice, for example, if their attacker is released from jail. But now the enhanced app will also connect the victim with services, both locally and across the country. Individual is able to access the offenders well as be notified whether or not that individual is going to get released or transferred to another jurisdiction. The vine program was first launched back in 2006. Last year in virginia, some 70,000 people registered to receive notice about offenders. Every day jurors convict suspects of crimes, but have you ever heard of a jury digging into their own pockets to pay the court fines for a convicted thief . News4s david culver explains what motivated a group of fairfax jurors to do just that. Reporter when he reported to jury duty this summer, he and 11 others were handed the case of sandra. It was a twoday trial. I could see she was a good person that made a mistake, and she didnt know what to do about it. Reporter the young housekeeper had confessed to stealing these rings from a fairfax family. After police questioned her and two other maids, she handed them to find her guilty. Reporter but the jurors were also touched by her story. Its a story she could barely tell me without breaking down into tears. She said last year at 19, she was desperate. She had a toddler who was pregnant and all alone. A single mom. I only worked to provide for my kids, she said. The jury could have sentenced her to prison. Instead they fined her 60. The daily amount she earned cleaning homes. But after the trial, the jurors wanted to do more. One of the female jurors pulled out a 20 bill and said, i want to help pay for her, her fine. And i dont know if it was everybody, but the vast majority of jurors did the same thing, including me. Reporter but the jurors generosity isnt sitting well with everyone in this case, especially the victims, the they told the Washington Post who first reported this that sandra hasnt fully accepted responsibility. I just pray the jurors arent in my shoes, the victims told the post. As for sandra, shes happy. Grateful for a Second Chance. In fairfax, david culver, news4. David culver, thank you. Officials at penn state come under fire tonight in a grand jury report on hazing after the death of a fraternity student. That report finds the university has a shocking dangers of excessive drinking. And thats in its inaction allowed criminal acts to occur. The report follows a tenmonth investigation set off by the death of a pledge named Timothy Piazza during a frat party. Penn state allowed these students to police themselves and the results were absolutely predictable. More than two dozen students are charged in piazzas death. This report recommends penn state regulate drinking rather than allow a Fraternity Council do it. And it calls for expelling students for hazing. They have yet to comment on the report. 15 students are among those charged for a hazing incident at radulov for the university. A student was forced to drink until he passed out, then he was branded. The 15 students are involved with a fraternity that lost its year. The University Calls the branding reprehensible and promises to hold students accountable, including suspension or dismissal. That is going to be the case right on through the next couple of hours. If youre traveling south, 95 south or out west, yeah, drying ro roads are okay. But watch out for the secondary roads.
