WWII veteran Gene Johnson, a coach for nearly six decades in the county, dies at 94 [Santa Cruz Sentinel, Calif.]
Jan. 17—WATSONVILLE — Gene Johnson, a World War II veteran who coached nearly six decades in Santa Cruz County, passed away Thursday, two days shy of his 95th birthday.
He spent the last 1 1/2 years at Valley Convalescent Hospital with his wife, Doris. Both COVID-19 survivors, they celebrated their 73rd anniversary at the nursing home.
Robert Johnson said his father cherished athletics because it provided him a platform to teach life lessons. Johnson is also survived by his daughter, Kim Carolan, and five grandchildren.
