Buckingham Palace has announced that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, has died at the age of 99.
The Duke and the Queen were married for more than 70 years and Philip dedicated decades of his life to royal duty, serving the nation at the monarch’s side.
He officially retired from public engagements in the summer of 2017.
The Palace said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

The Mayor of Colchester Robert Davidson said: “On behalf of the people of Colchester, I would like to express my deepest sorrow at the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh and to convey our profound sympathy and condolences to all members of the royal family at this sad time.

Updates and reaction as the Duke of Edinburgh has died, Buckingham Palace has announced.
A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
The Prince recently returned home after being treated in hospital.
