Britain’s governing Conservative Party has gained another seat in the House of Commons by winning the Hartlepool constituency from Labour in a by-election.
Governing parties taking seats from the opposition during by-elections, as BBC political editor Richard Moss puts it, “is not supposed to happen” and yet Labour have indeed lost to Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party 11 years into Tory control of the country. Analysts, including Mr Moss, have attributed the decisive Tory victory to ex-Brexit party voters in the area which won a quarter of the vote in 2019 moving to the Conservatives rather than back to Labour.
The Conservatives have secured a thumping victory in the Hartlepool parliamentary by-election.
Jill Mortimer will be the town s new member of parliament, after defeating Labour s Paul Williams by a majority of 6,940 votes.

Hartlepool had been held by Labour since 1964, and since the current constituency was formed in 1974.
It s only the second time since 1982 that an opposition party has lost a by-election to a party in government.

The by-election was called after the resignation of Labour s Mike Hill in March. He is accused of sexual harassment, which he denies. His majority was just over 3,500 at the general election in 2019.

Former First Minister Carwyn Jones has not stood for election again so the constituency will get a new MS. He was elected in 2016 with a 20.9% majority.
A CLEAN sweep of victories have been clinched by the Conservatives in a string of Stockton by-elections. Five empty seats saw campaigns fought in Yarm, Hartburn, Billingham West, Bishopsgarth and Elm Tree, and the Western Parishes on May 6. And it was the Tories who boosted their numbers on the council from 11 to 16 – gaining two seats held by the Liberal Democrats and an independent. Niall Innes claimed almost three-quarters of the vote defending the Hartburn ward seat previously held by Stockton South MP Matt Vickers. Cllr Innes said he was “speechless” at the result and “delighted and honoured” to be elected.
