Kids will start going back to school soon in Lubbock and hopefully this will be a somewhat normal year where most, if not all instruction is done face to face and in a classroom. It also means we will start seeing more back to school sales, fundraisers, and drives. The City of Lubbock Health Department s Prevention Resource Center Region 1 group along with the Hub City Outreach Center are partnering together for a back to school hygiene drive for the students in Lubbock. Hygiene items that you want to donate can be dropped off at the City of Lubbock Health Department located at 806 18th Street. The items can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Highest Daily Count of COVID-19 Cases Since February in Lubbock

Only time will tell if this is more than a one or two-day spike, but on Tuesday, July 20th, the City of Lubbock Health Department reported its highest one-day number of COVID-19 cases since February. Tuesday, 73 new Coronavirus cases were diagnosed in Lubbock County, the highest single-day number since 70 were diagnosed on February 10th, 2021 and 106 cases on February 2nd. Two additional deaths were also reported on Tuesday. Lubbock s Coronavirus recovery rate is currently at 97.6 percent, and 0.9 percent of the 49,966 total cases diagnosed are active. However, the number of active cases has recently risen in Lubbock County over the past few weeks to 442 on Tuesday.

Tech to host COVID-19 testing at Lubbock Health Department

The Institute of Environmental and Human Health that houses Texas Tech s COVID-19 testing team will offer drive-up and walk-up COVID-19 testing at the City of Lubbock s Health Department, located at 806 18th St., according to a news release from Tech. The testing is free of cost and will be offered from noon to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday with no appointment needed, according to the release. According to Steve Presley, director of TIEHH and chair of the Department of Environmental Toxicology, testing has been going on for about three weeks and will continue as long as they are receiving testing samples.

In fact, that is exactly the goal for the health department in Lubbock. Getting out into the community, where people are going and attending events that people are attending is exactly what the health department is doing.
