Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Veteran Mollie Andrews. Mollie had a goal Her 3o Year Reunion was coming up and she wanted to do everything she could to lose weight. She tried several programs without results and finally she joined the VAs MOVE program. It was a program that involved group sessions which she said held her accountable and allowed her to make new friends. She found the group support she didn’t know she needed in the form of texts, emails and Facebook posts and by the time the reunion rolled around she had lost 70 pounds. She enjoyed compliments from her friends that she had not seen in 30 years. As a result, she was inspired to continue working towards her weight loss goal: to lose 30 more pounds. Keep up the great work Mollie and THANK YOU for your service.

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Navy Veteran Paul Grisham in an unbelievable story. In 1967 Paul was stationed as a Navy Meteorologist in Antarctica where he reported for the science station and airport on Ross Island. He was there for 13-months before he returned to California. The one thing that didn’t make the return trip was his wallet. 53-years later, his old wallet was found by a father/daughter team during the demolition of a building at the southernmost town on Earth. Inside was his Navy ID, a beer ration punch card, a card with instructions on what to do in the event of an atomic, biological or chemical weapons attack and a recipe for homemade Kahlua. The Spirit of 45 Non-Profit helped track Paul Down and return the wallet to him. Paul said he was blown away. Thank you Paul for the great story and TH

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Marine Veteran James Martin. James joined the Marines in 2000, served in Iraq and Afghanistan and in 2015 qualified for medical retirement after being injured and paralyzed from the waist down. This father to 8 worked with the Wounded Warrior Project during the pandemic to help other Veterans stay in touch during a time when so many of us were apart. It’s these efforts that landed James the role as one of the honorary captains who will take the field on Sunday in Tampa to take art in the coin flip. On being chosen, James says, “I’m absolutely astonished, humbled and surprised”. Congratulations on your well deserved honor and THANK YOU for your service.

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honor British World War II Veteran Captain Sir Tom Moore. What Captain Moore did at the beginning of the pandemic in Britain during the height of the first wave was inspiring to the world. You’ll remember that during lock down he walked around his garden with his walker and raised $53 million dollars for the National Health Service of England. He spread joy, and shared a message with the world that the sun would shine again and that the clouds would clear. He was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth. After battling skin and prostate cancer for several years and recently being admitted to the hospital for Covid-19, Sir Tom Moore has died at the age of 100. Thank you for your joy and positivity Tom and THANK YOU for your service.
