NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday extended the Rs 50 lakh insurance cover to health workers for the next three months to ensure that in case of any adversity due to Covid-19, their families are taken care of.
“During the coronavirus pandemic, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package has provided a safety net to the dependants of corona warriors who lost their lives to Covid-19. I’m glad to announce that this scheme has now been extended for a period of one year with effect from today,” health minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted.
The scheme was launched last year to provide a safety net to health workers. Earlier, the health ministry had said claims under PMGKP will be settled till April 24 and that a new cover will be announced. The announcement to extend the scheme came soon after PM Narendra Modi addressed the nation and lauded health workers and other corona warriors during these difficult times.

After facing a backlash on social media about not doing anything on the expired Rs50 lakh insurance cover for doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, the Indian government decided to resume the same policy from 20 April 2021. However, there is no word in the notification about what happens to the insurance protection during the period from 24th March, when the policy expired and 20 April 2021, when it is resumed.
In a tweet message, Dr Harsh Vardhan, union minister for health & family welfare says, During the Corona virus pandemic, the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) has provided a safety net to the dependents of Corona Warriors, who lost their lives to COVID19. I am glad to announce that this scheme has now been extended for a period of one year with effect from today.

NEW DELHI: Families of only 168 doctors, out of at least 756 who died during Covid-19 duty in India, have benefitted from the Rs 50 lakh insurance coverage provided by the Centre so far, according to data from the Indian Medical Association.
It means families of only about one in five doctors who succumbed to the disease got their claims settled, under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package, announced for nearly 22 lakh healthcare workers last year. The total number of claims settled is 287, which suggests that families of only 119 healthcare workers across other categories have benefitted from this.
