JBS providing college, trade school tuition free | News, Sports, Jobs

Marshalltown’s biggest employer is providing free college and trade school opportunities for their employees, including dependents of employees. Members of Marshalltown Community School Board heard from JBS Marshalltown General Manager Todd Carl at Monday night’s board meeting about the “Better Futures Program,” in which JBS USA will give employees and their dependents the opportunity to pursue associates degrees and trade certificates tuition free, paid for by JBS. Carl said one intention of the “Better Futures” program is to grow and sustain JBS’s workforce.

Trevor Babcock Discussions of race, gender and sexuality in one Iowa public school district are raising questions about what content schools should be responsible for teaching their students. In February, as a part of Black History Month, Ames Community School District engaged in “Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action.” The district described the program as time set aside to affirm all Black identities by centering Black voices and to teach about Black experiences beyond slavery. The lessons also included education affirming LGBTQ identities. The programming was not officially affiliated with any Black Lives Matter organization and parents were able to opt their children out of the education.

Interscholastic conference provides opportunities for student success | News, Sports, Jobs

Contributing Writer The Marshalltown Community School District anxiously awaits the new opportunities for increased student participation, school pride and individual student and team success that the creation of the new interscholastic conference will provide in the 2022-23 school year. Marshalltown plans to form a new 10-team conference with the districts of Ames, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Mason City and Ottumwa and believes this decision is in the best interest of our students, families and our community. Marshalltown High School has a rich history of interscholastic excellence and success dating back to the early 1900’s. It has achieved 34 state sanctioned state team championships with the first being in wrestling in 1925 and the most recent this year’s 2021 boys’ bowling team. Individual statewide athletic achievements have been recognized, since 1965, on a Wall of Honor found on the south endcap wall of the MHS Roundhouse and soon all documented pre-1965 individual state

MCSD students learn about Holocaust | News, Sports, Jobs

lbradstream@timesrepublican.com CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS Senior students in Shelly Chandler’s English class at Marshalltown High School research aspects of the Holocaust on Friday. Chandler believes it is important not to hide history from young minds. Surprisingly high numbers of millennials and Generation Z Iowans have little to no knowledge of the Holocaust. Results from a recent survey by the Claims Conference was released after information was gathered from each state in America. According to that information, 65 percent of the surveyed people in Iowa did not know 6 million Jews were slaughtered, and 41 percent were unable to name a single concentration camp.
