Oishee’s leave to appeal plea to seek acquittal granted

DHAKA, March 15, 2021 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today granted a leave to appeal petition of Oishee Rahman to seek acquittal in a case where she has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her parents in 2013.
The apex court also dismissed a state plea against a High Court order that had commuted her death sentence to life imprisonment in 2017.
A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order today.
“As a result of today’s order, Oishee got the chance to appeal against her life imprisonment sentence,” defence counsel Foysal H Khan said.

The High Court yesterday upheld a lower court s verdict that convicted and sentenced Haji Md Salim to 10 years in prison in a corruption case filed by the ACC during the military-backed caretaker government in 2007.
It also upheld a fine of Tk 10 lakh imposed on the Awami League lawmaker from Dhaka-7 for amassing wealth worth Tk 14.65 crore beyond known sources of his income.
The HC, however, scrapped another part of the lower court s judgement delivered in 2008 which handed three years imprisonment to Salim for concealing information about his wealth to the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday called upon the country s women to become more qualified through education and training to realise their own rights. Rights have to be realised and qualification is needed to realise it. This qualification would come through education and training, she said.
