judge tanya chutkan for a status hearing. special counsel jack smith's team has proposed the trial begin in early january of next year. in response, trump's lawyers requested that the trial not begin until 2 1/2 years after that, all the way to april of 2026. the former president has pleaded not guilty to four charges related to his alleged efforts to stay in power following his 2020 election loss to now president joe biden. and now that all 19 codefendants in the fulton county election interference case have been processed at the county jail, activity at the courthouse is beginning to heat up. the first major court battle will begin today as former white house chief of staff mark meadows pushes to move his case from fulton county to federal court. four other defendants have made similar moves, using a 1789 law,

have time to get a dry run and hear the evidence that the government might want to put on against them. he made some fair points when it came to the complexity. >> sure. >> we could have seen a case where the district attorney didn't need 2 1/2 years to investigate but came in quickly with a call -- a charge base -- >> but one of the things that i sense, of course, there's politics afoot with a district attorney who was elected and all the rest and bragg in new york. i do think that there is an incentive for district attorneys and the like to try to provide a disincentive for any politician trying to do this ever again. not just a president but a local alderman or a congressional candidate. this coordinated conspiracy about lying about an election
