Four under used telephone boxes could be removed from communities across Newtown as more people use mobile phones leading to a drop in the number of calls made from payphones. Telecoms company BT has listed phone boxes that are under threat including one kiosk that has not been used during the past 12 months. They include the phoneboxes on the corner of Lon Helyg and Llanidloes Road, outside the library in Park Lane, outside the Pryce Jones Building and opposite the railway station and on Canal Road. Residents in those areas are being encouraged to adopt a phone box and turn it into something useful for the community such as storing defibrillators or books.
A series of planned road closures on the Newtown bypass will take place over the next seven days. Kerry Road roundabout to Pool Road roundabout will be the first part to shut for maintenance works. It is due to be closed for two days from tomorrow (Wednesday, May 19). Then from Friday, May 21, the section between Upper Dolfor Road roundabout and Llanidloes Road roundabout will also close for two days. The third and final two-day road closure will take place between the Upper Dolfor Road roundabout and Kerry Road roundabout from Monday, May 24. Warning signs have been put in place along the bypass ahead of the work which is expected to be completed by Wednesday, May 26.
A section of road through Newtown will reopen for the Bank Holiday weekend. The road under Nantoer Bridge in Llanidloes Road has been closed since Tuesday while roadworks are being carried out. A Powys County Council spokeswoman said: “The road will then be closed again for a further two days next week, for resurfacing. Which two days will be confirmed ASAP. “After Friday, May 7, all road works will be completed. The only outstanding task will be to make some final adjustments to permanent traffic lights, which is planned for later in the month.” The Nantoer Bridge area of Llanidloes Road will have one traffic lane with two-way traffic-controlled lights once work is completed.
