Union workers at the U.S. Postal Service’s processing and distribution center in Manchester say plans to consolidate workers and equipment in Boston will cost jobs and slow mail delivery.

After delays and postponements, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has scheduled a public meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 6:30 p.m. at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

Concerned community members and postal workers are trying to raise awareness about the U.S. Postal Services review of the northwest Champaign post office.

Without holding the public meeting to receive comment on potential changes to the United States Postal Service Processing and Distribution Center in South Charleston, the organization has released its initial findings that recommend restructuring, updating equipment and some layoffs.

The USPS has released the initial findings of its Mail Processing Facility Review for its facility on William Street in Buffalo.

In an Initial Findings Document (IFD), posted Jan. 30, 2024, United States Postal Service officials now say that the Charleston P&DC, 1000 Centre Way in South Charleston, will be modernized and expanded with streamlined package processing and distribution capabilities, as well as new workplace amenities for the 800 postal employees there.

There is worry over what will happen with the facility on William Street. David Grosskopf Jr. said he's concerned that USPS supports modernizing this facility as a local processing center.

The U.S. Postal Service is conducting a mail processing facility review of the post office at 2001 N. Mattis Ave and seeking feedback from the public.

USPS confirmed it is not planning to close its Northwest Arkansas Processing and Distribution Center, instead it will be repurposed as a Local Processing Center.

Government officials have voiced their concerns, but those may be falling on deaf ears.
