Boris Johnson has come up with a pathetic excuse of ‘nobody told me that I was breaking the rules’ - those very rules which he, as leader of the nation, had imposed upon the people of the UK and by which he too was bound.

Brian Wilson’s article “SNP are being given a far too easy ride by Scotland’s broadcasters” (Perspective, 22 January) was excellent, all the more so because it is time that what he said is a matter for open debate. The daily deluge of statistics about Covid numbs the brain but cannot obscure the seismic change in the public perception of what security actually means. Real security is reciprocal and interdependent. We cannot build our security on another country’s insecurity. As Martin Luther King said: “We must learn to live together as brothers, or to perish together as fools.”

I was concerned to read a letter whose premise seems to be that “While the rest of the NHS buckles under the strain of Covid, GP staff are living the life of Riley” (Scotsman, 28 December).

The welcome research by the National Trust for Scotland noting that the number of its sites with known links to slavery has more than doubled (Scotsman, 22 December) should come as no surprise.

I am very concerned about the potential of another lockdown of hospitality coming soon after Christmas.

The article “BCM vows to get tough on rowdy behaviour” on December 16 refers. It is music to my ears as I look to BCM to punitively apply its bylaws. On December 8, I strolled down to Eastern Beach with my foreigner friend to get him to enjoy our amenities. What we saw was an eyesore. The beach area including the rocky embankment was littered with broken bottles, plastic and other man-made debris.

No matter how low the bar is set for leadership and responsibility, Boris Johnson seems to effortlessly limbo under it. Brian Wilson (Scotsman, December 11) foresees the end as Johnson ceases to be an electoral asset, with Rishi Sunak his most likely successor.
