STEELE, Mo. (KAIT) - When a neighbor reportedly opened fire on police, a Missouri dad dashed to protect his son.
The alleged officer-involved shooting happened Thursday on East Main Street in Steele.
Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield said Howard Covie Underwood, 41, of Kennett and two officers exchanged gunfire.
Neither the officers nor Underwood was injured, Stanfield said.
Justin Becker, a Steele resident, was at home when he heard the first shots fired.

STEELE, Mo. (KFVS) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Steele, Mo.
The shooting happened on East Main Street on Thursday, March 11.
According to Steele Police Chief Billy Jo Stanfield, two Steele officers were involved in a shooting with a 41-year-old Kennett man.
The officers and the suspect were not injured.
The suspect was taken into custody and is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail on two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, weapon(s) violation, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
It happened just after midnight on Sandle Street near Dolly Wright in the Acres Homes area.
Officers were called to the area after a report of someone who d been hit over the head with a gun, according to Houston police. When they arrived, they found a man sitting in a car.
The man pulled out a gun and began firing at officers, investigators said. Three officers returned fire and hit the man, who was expected to survive.
The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition. He s expected to be charged with assault on a peace officer.
No officers were hurt in the incident.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department released the name of the officer involved in a shooting with an armed man in West Ashley Wednesday morning.
The agency identified him as Senior Police Officer Christopher Malinowski, who has served with the department for eight years.
Police spokesman Charles Francis said Malinowski is on administrative leave as part of its standard procedure.
Police also released the officer’s discipline history. Those records indicate he received a compliment from a citizen praising his assistance to a stranded, elderly driver.
