The federal government made several shifts in COVID policy this week: Requiring international travelers to test negative before flying to the United States, changing the guidance for vaccine eligibility, and releasing doses originally held back.
ALBANY COUNTY Patience was advised this week on both the state and local levels as residents clamored for COVID-19 vaccines while the supply remained limited.
“It’s gonna take time, people. You have to be patient,” said Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy at his Tuesday morning press briefing.
In its 44th week of battling the virus, Albany County broke records for hospitalizations with 163 announced on Thursday and for new cases, with 351 announced on Tuesday, topping the Jan. 1 record of 346.

ALBANY The COVID-positive patient census in Capital Region hospitals remains just shy of an all-time high, the state reported Wednesday 525 on Tuesday, down from 529 on Monday.
While the number of patients is now much higher than during the springtime surge of the pandemic, the illnesses appear to be less severe now a much smaller percentage of patients are in an intensive care unit.
Of the 529 people hospitalized Monday, just 76 were in an ICU, or about 14%.
On the worst day in the spring, 205 COVID patients were hospitalized in the Capital Region, 96 of them in an ICU, or about 47%.
Bethlehem schools begin testing staff for coronavirus

BETHLEHEM The school district said it began rapid testing asymptomatic staff for COVID-19 Thursday, in anticipation of bringing 7-12 graders back to in-person learning next week.
Bethlehem schools said it has begun testing teachers and other staff at the middle and high schools, and will expand to testing employees from other schools next week. Student testing will begin shortly after that, the district said. Middle and high schoolers, with parent approval, will be tested at school. Elementary students have to be brought to the district s highway garage for drive-thru testing if they are selected to be part of the testing pool.
