After refusing to release details about wasted coronavirus vaccine, citing a decades-old disease prevention law, the Wolf administration has reversed course and made public how many doses have been discarded by providers and why.
The data shows just 0.18% of more than 10 million doses given to hospitals, pharmacies, and other providers through May 21 were not used.
Of the 18,644 discarded doses, providers reported spoilage as the cause in more than 37% of cases. Spoiled vaccines typically include those that have expired or those that were not stored at the correct temperature due to conditions like equipment failure, state health officials said.

The Allegheny County Health Department shut down the Dunkin’ on East 10th Avenue in Tarentum after inspectors discovered what they said was sewage leaking from a grease trap and covering part of the floor.
The May 21 inspection led inspectors to deem the coffee and doughnut shop an “imminent hazard,” forcing the location to shut down immediately.
The inspection report said the sewage leaking from the grease trap formed a large puddle that employees had to walk through, meaning it was tracked throughout the shop.
Pennsylvania passed a milestone with more than 50% of adults considered fully vaccinated against covid-19.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 5,088,210 million adults those 18 and older who are considered fully vaccinated. That’s 50.1% of the adult population. Pennsylvania’s mask mandate can be lifted when 70% of the state’s adults are fully vaccinated.
The CDC also reported that 40.1% of all Pennsylvanians (5.1 million) are considered fully vaccinated and 55.4% (7 million) have at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine.
In Allegheny County 721,245 residents (58.9% of all residents) have received at least one dose of a covid vaccine, while 519,540 individuals are fully covered (42.4% of all residents).
