According to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in just over a month cases involving Michigan residents 19 and younger jumped from 1,526 on Feb. 20 to 6,783 on March 27, nearly four times as much. Additionally, Michigan residents aged 10-19 years old now make up nearly 16 percent of state COVI-19 cases, which is up 8.5 percent from before January, state data shows. The Health Department of Northwest Michigan says it has seen 277 new cases of the novel coronavirus over the last 14 days; 30% of them were in kids age 13 to 19. And most of those cases showed no symptoms. Benzie/Leelanau District Health Department also said on Thursday they were seeing an uptick of cases in their school districts. And the Grand Traverse Co. Health Department said on Tuesday, “In Grand Traverse County we are seeing clusters that are related to social gatherings. Particularly social gatherings outside of school like sleepovers and other types of parties.” She adds that the clusters “are not related to school-related activities or exposure in the schools. So we want to make that clear.”

Virus aid to communities blocked amid power dispute

Gretchen Whitmer of blocking roughly $1 billion worth of federal COVID-19 funding allocations. But the appropriations bills the governor vetoed Tuesday also would have come with certain administrative strings attached, stripping the governor and her administration of many of the powers she and the Michigan health department have employed in response to the pandemic. Despite vetoing part of the $3.2 billion package, Whitmer did approve other parts of the plan. Republicans say the veto represents both an unwillingness to compromise with the legislature, and a disregard for Michigan’s suffering families and small businesses.
