Pedestrian dies after being struck by vehicle in Newark

A person was struck and killed early Tuesday on a street in Newark, according to investigators.
Detectives with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office responded about 3 a.m. to a person fatally struck in the area of Emerson Place and Frelinghuysen Avenue.
“It is very early in the investigation and no further information is available at this time,” said Kathy Carter, spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office.

1 killed, another critically injured in N.J. crash, officials say

One person was killed and another was left in critical condition after a two-vehicle wreck in Essex County, officials said Monday.
The crash, which occurred around 6 a.m. Sunday at Freeway Drive and South Harrison Street in East Orange, involved a passenger vehicle and a tanker truck, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly, of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was hospitalized in critical condition, Fennelly said. A passenger in that vehicle died at the scene. Authorities withheld the name of the passenger while family could be informed.

Prosecutors are seeking two men in relation to a stray bullet that killed a 63-year-old grandmother as she celebrated her birthday with family on her porch on March 11.
Debra Derrick was shot as she and her family gathered outside her Leigh Avenue home near Newark Beth Israel Medical Center to release a bouquet of balloons in honor of her birthday around 8 p.m., but investigators do not believe she was the intended target, according to Katherine Carter of the Essex County Prosecutor s Office.
The office is searching for two men captured in surveillance footage in connection with the investigation.

Authorities in Essex County are seeking the public s help in locating two persons of interest in connection with the killing of a 63-year-old grandmother.
Debra Derrick was shot on the front porch of a home on the 200 block of Lehigh Avenue in Newark, while celebrating her late twin sister around 8 p.m. on March 11, the Essex County Prosecutor s Office announced.
Derrick who was with her grandchildren and other family members at the time of the incident later died of her injuries, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said.
