A milestone and memorial 1 year into pandemic | News, Sports, Jobs

A permanent COVID-19 memorial will be erected at Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in observance of the global pandemic and representing a tribute to the loved ones lost. A central element of the memorial will a be a bronze sculpture by Timothy Schmalz, a world-renowned artist with international installations at churches, cathedrals and the Vatican. The sculpture, titled “When I Was Sick,” is part of a series by Schmalz. It will be funded by donations to the Mercy Health Foundation – Mahoning Valley. YOUNGSTOWN St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital will be home later this year to a large memorial to remember and honor those directly affected by the yearlong health pandemic.

YOUNGSTOWN A Lake Milton man has sued an Akron woman and man alleging that on July 2, 2019, the woman failed to operate a personal watercraft on Lake Milton in a safe and reasonable manner, crashing into his personal watercraft. Francis D. Martauz of Roselawn Street filed the suit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. It names as defendants Pamela M. and Karl L. Fickey of Akron and Allstate Insurance Co. The suit alleges that Martauz suffered permanent personal injuries, was required to seek medical care, suffered great pain of mind and body, incurred financial obligations, economic loss, property damage, lost wages and other injury, damage and loss.

YOUNGSTOWN A federal court filing describes threats an FBI agent says the father of Friday afternoon’s homicide victim on Market Street made on his Facebook page that evening. The postings, including videos, threatened to take revenge on those involved in his son’s death and family members of those involved. The threats led to city man Damon Irby Sr., 44, being arrested Tuesday and placed in the Mahoning County jail. Irby Sr. will remain in the jail at least until a detention hearing in U.S. District Court on Monday, according to federal court documents. A criminal complaint filed Tuesday accuses him of being a felon in possession of a firearm related to a 2019 investigation.

YOUNGSTOWN Police tonight are investigating the second shooting of the day. Police were dispatached about 8 p.m. to the 500 block of Lee Avenue where a person had been wounded in the leg by gunfire. Police declined to offer any details on the shooting. The victim was being treated at an area hospital. A 4-year-old boy remained in critical condition after being wounded shortly before 2 p.m. in the Victory Estates apartments. Police were called at 1:50 p.m. tody to the apartment in the 600 block of McBride Street on the East Side, where they found a woman in the rear of the apartment holding a boy, 4, with a gunshot wound, Youngstown police said.
