A man who raped, assaulted and threatened to kill a woman in Sutton has been jailed.
Russell Stowell, 41, (2.3.80), of Rivers Gardens, SM5 was sentenced to a total of 11 years’ imprisonment, with an extended license of four years, at Croydon Crown Court on Thursday, 13 May as follows:
One count of rape – five years concurrent
One count of grievous bodily harm with intent – 11 years
One count of wounding with intent – seven years concurrent
One count of making threats to kill – two years concurrent
Stowell pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. However, on 17 December 2020, following a trial at Croydon Crown Court, he was found guilty on all counts as above.
A woman who was attacked in Ilford last month has died as a result of her injuries.
At 14:08hrs on Friday, 9 April, police were called by the London Ambulance Service following reports that a woman had been assaulted inside a residential address in Princes Road, IG6.
Svetlana Mihalachi, 53, was found with serious injuries and taken to hospital where, on Wednesday, 12 May, she sadly died.
Detective Superintendent Paul Trevers said: “Our thoughts are with Svetlana’s family following this incredibly sad development. They are being supported by specialist officers.
“A man has already been charged with attempted murder in relation to this incident. Following Svetlana’s death, a murder investigation has been launched.

Four men have been jailed for more than 71 years after being found guilty of raping a woman in Ealing.
The group subjected the victim to a prolonged and repeated attack after meeting her at a nightclub in August 2017.
Detective Constable Angie Meadows, who worked on the investigation, said: “Over the course of my career this is one of the worst assaults I have ever dealt with and they deserve such lengthy prison sentences.”
Octavian Lupu, 31 (03.07.90), of Coldharbour Lane, Hayes, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment.
Andrei Rotaru, 25 (09.12.95), of Clun Road, Littlehampton, was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment.

Police are appealing for the public’s help to trace a man who absconded from Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield.
Aaron Fell, aged 23, was reported missing from a mental health unit at around 10.00hrs on Thursday, 13 May.
He is a white man, of medium build, with dark hair and blue eyes. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of his disappearance.
Members of the public are urged not to approach him and to call 999 immediately, quoting 2091/13May21.

A man has been jailed after specialist officers discovered a cache of automatic firearms and ammunition hidden in his home, as well as a large quantity of Class A drugs and more than £140,000 in cash.
Terence O’Connor, 25 (03.12.95), of Webb Street, Bolton, was sentenced to 16 years, three months at Harrow Crown Court on Monday, 10 May following an intelligence led investigation conducted by the Met’s Proactive Money Laundering Team.
At Harrow Crown Court on 21 August 2020, O’Connor pleaded guilty to:
Two counts of possession of a Class A drug (cocaine);
Being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug (cocaine);
