Ahead of oath-taking, outgoing CM Sarbananda Sonowal says younger brother Himanta Biswa Sarma will take Assam to greater heights

Guwahati: Assam s caretaker Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday expressed confidence that the newly elected NDA Legislature Party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is like a younger brother to him, would take the state to greater heights.
A week after the ruling alliance won the assembly elections with a clear majority for the second successive term, Sarma was elected as the legislature party leader. Both Sonowal and Sarma were contenders for the top post.

Guwahati, May 9 : BJP s lead strategist in northeastern states and party s senior leader Himanta Biswa Sarma would be the next Chief Minister of Assam as he on Sunday was elected the leader of the BJP legislature party by the newly elected MLAs. The saffron party returned to power in Assam for the second consecutive term.
The 52-years-old leader was elected the leader of the BJP legislature party at a meeting held at the Assam assembly campus where outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananada Sonowal and party s four central observers were present.

In the recently concluded Assam Assembly Polls, BJP led alliance won 75 out of 126 seats. The saffron party alone bagged 60 seats while Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 9 seats. The United People s Party Liberal (UPPL) won six seats.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda conducted crucial meetings with Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday.
In the first two rounds of meetings, BJP leaders met Sonowal and Sarma separately whereas in the third round of meeting, they met both the leaders together.
Ranjeet Kumar Dass said, The chief minister s name will be announced in the meeting. Four senior leaders of the party - BL Santosh, Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar, BJP national general secretary Arun Singh, party s state in-charge Baijayant Jay Panda - will attend the meeting. Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the new Assam chief minister.
His name as the BJP Legislature Party leader was proposed by outgoing CM Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by BJP state unit chief and MLA Ranjeet Kumar Dass and MLA Nandita Garlosa.
In the 126-member Assam House, BJP has 60 MLAs. Its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People s Party Liberal (UPPL) have nine and six MLAs respectively. Both parties backed Sarma as the CM. The swearing-in is expected on Monday.
The BJP legislature party meeting was also attended by party’s central leaders Narendra Singh Tomar, BL Santhosh, Arun Singh and Vaijyanta Panda.

Announcing Sarma s name, Union Agriculture Minister Narednra Singh Tomar said that the outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananada Sonowal proposed Sarma s name as the leader of the BJP s legislature party and others supported it.
