A 19-year-old man awaits sentencing for fatally shooting a 24-year-old man during a $70 marijuana deal outside a Rochester apartment building.
Robert B. Salley Jr. pleaded guilty in Olmsted County District Court to second-degree murder and an illegal weapons count in connection with the shooting death on Jan. 10, 2020, of Trevor Boysen outside the Quarters Apartments in the 800 block of SE. 21st Avenue.
Salley, who lived at the apartment complex at the time, remains jailed ahead of sentencing on March 8. County Attorney Mark Ostrem told the Star Tribune that his office will seek a 17½-year term for Salley.

This was a senseless act of violence, Judge Kathy Wallace said in handing down her sentence. A wife was stripped of her husband and two children, two very young children, ages 7 and 9, were stripped of having a father for the rest of their lives.

ROCHESTER, Minn. A Rochester man has been charged with two felonies after he was reportedly heard on recorded jail calls making plans to continue to collect unemployment while incarcerated.
An investigator with the Olmsted County Sheriff s Office was reviewing inmate phone calls for an unrelated investigation when he came across calls made by an inmate, identified as Samuel Steward, directing a friend to log into his unemployment account and continue to collect benefits on his behalf while he was incarcerated, according to Sgt. James Schueller.

A vehicle left outside of a Marion Township bar was stolen after the driver s one intended drink turned into three hours.
The Olmsted County Sheriff s Office took a report of a stolen silver 2001 Lexus RX 300 Thursday night.
A 62-year-old Southeast Rochester man, who was working on the vehicle for a customer, told deputies he had driven the vehicle the to Shar s Country Palace & Bar, 3925 Marion Road SE, about 6 p.m. and left it running in the lot because he intended to have one drink, according to Sgt. James Schueller.
