Florida man posed as attorney to scam N.J. man out of $10K, prosecutor says

A Florida man who posed as an attorney to scam a Barnegat resident out of $10,000 last month remained wanted by police this week, authorities said.
Juan C. Piedrahita, 49, of Hollywood, Florida, was charged with theft by deception on Feb. 12 for his alleged actions which took place in January, according to a joint statement from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Barnegat Police Department.
An investigation by the agencies showed that Piedrahita, posing as an attorney, called the man and told him his nephew was involved in a crash, was arrested and that he needed $10,000 in cash to bail him out of jail, the office said.

Driver who admitted leaving scene of deadly crash gets prison sentence

Mashon Wilson, 30, pleaded guilty on Jan. 8 to knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and driving while suspended, according to a release from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. He also pleaded guilty to an unrelated charge of burglary.
Wilson received a six-year prison sentence for the first, most serious charge and 45 days in county jail with credit for time served for pleading guilty to driving while suspended and four years in state prison for the burglary charge, the office said. The sentences will run concurrently.
