Enforce relocation of markets from highways, FRSC tells states

Punch Newspapers Sections Kayode Oyero The Federal Road Safety Corps has urged state governments to enforce the relocation of markets from highways to safer sites. According to FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, markets along highways in the country are a threat to the safety of road users, adding that last month’s unfortunate crash at Akungba Akoko in Ondo State was one of the many fatal accidents caused by the presence of markets along the highways. Oyeyemi spoke on Thursday while featuring in a television programme in Abuja monitored by The PUNCH. He said, “The resolution of the National Council is that all markets must leave the right of way and we are going to work with the various Comptrollers of Works and give an ultimatum to them. The state governments must also enforce the relocation of markets by the roadsides. Apart from causing a lot of traffic challenges, the threat to the safety of lives and property is a fundamental issue that must be addressed.”

FRSC The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Thursday assured commuters and transporters that it would sustain the current free flow of traffic along the Ogun axis of the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. The Ogun Sector Commander of the corps, Mr Ahmed Umar, gave the assurance in Abeokuta in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Umar, who said there had been substantial and noticeable improvement in the traffic situation along the Ogun corridor of the expressway, pledged that the FRSC would sustain this. He attributed the development to the recently inaugurated “Operation Zero Road Crashes” across the country by the corps.

Another petitioner, 81-year-old grandfather, Chief Lucky Amakiri, alleged that his grandson, Blessing Amakiri, was shot dead by the men of Ekeki Police Division on mere suspicion of belonging to a cult group. Chief Amakiri said his grandson, 19, was killed while on errand at the former Oyoyo Market in Ovom area of Yenagoa. The families of two police officers killed on June 14, 2020 in Ughelli, Delta State allegedly by men of the disbanded Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad while on special duty alongside five other policemen also petitioned the panel.
