During the week of April 25-May 1, a total of 230 initial weekly claims for state unemployment benefits were processed by the Department of Labor and Regulation. This is a decrease of 158 claims from the prior week’s total of 388.
The latest number of continued state claims is 3,231 for the week ending April 24, an increase of 283 from the prior week’s total of 2,948. This indicates the number of unemployed workers eligible for and receiving benefits after their initial claim.
For the week ending May 1, a total of $565,000 was paid out in state benefits, in addition to $1 million in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), $113,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and $295,000 in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits.

Montana to end all pandemic unemployment benefits for jobless residents

Montana will soon stop paying federal pandemic unemployment benefits to its residents, opting instead to provide $1,200 return-to-work bonuses.
It is the first state to end participation in the historic federal expansion of jobless benefits, which Congress enacted last spring as the coronavirus pandemic began upending the national economy and costing millions of Americans their jobs.
The move, which may be replicated in other states as the economy springs back to life amid declining coronavirus cases, is necessary to address the state’s “severe worker shortage,” said Gov. Greg Gianforte, a Republican.

New weekly unemployment claims in Michigan declined last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday, but they remain at elevated levels.
New claims, a proxy for layoffs, dropped to 30,816 in the week ending May 1, down from 31,004 the week before, the labor department said.
That s nearly double what they were less than a month ago. A state labor department spokesperson attributes it to a movement of claimants from federal programs to regular state benefits.
New claims for federal programs, such as Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), are tallied separately from claims for regular state benefits.

Henry McMaster has ordered the termination of South Carolina’s participation in all federal, pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs.This will go into effect on June 30.McMaster directed the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce to take the action in a letter sent to DEW Executive Director Dan Ellzey.“South Carolina’s businesses have borne the brunt of the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those businesses that have survived, both large and small, and including those in the hospitality, tourism, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors – now face an unprecedented labor shortage,” McMaster wrote. “This labor shortage is being created in large part by the supplemental unemployment payments that the federal government provides claimants on top of their state unemployment benefits. In many instances, these payments are greater than the worker’s previous paychecks. What was intended to be a short-t
