Panama City Florida police catch murder suspect after he stole soda

The News Herald/USA TODAY NETWORK The News Herald PANAMA CITY What started as questions about a stolen soft drink from a local restaurant led to the arrest of a first degree murder suspect out of Mississippi over the weekend. According to a Panama City Police Department press release, Nathan Ramon Dubose, 21, was arrested after being found with active warrants for first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a firearm out of Jackson County, Mississippi. He was booked in the Bay County Jail to await extradition to Mississippi. The report states that officers responded to a restaurant in the 200 block of W. 15th Street Saturday afternoon regarding a theft. Officers learned that Dubose had entered the restaurant and filled a container with a soft drink and then left without paying.

Michael Lister heads book, music event in Panama City

The News Herald/USA TODAY NETWORK PANAMA CITY Local author Michael Lister has gathered some of his friends in singing and literature for a Words & Music event at Floriopolis, the cultural center of historic St. Andrews. The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, with new book signings by authors Lister, Terry Lewis, Pat Sabiston, Jayson Kretzer and Tony Simmons; a CD debut from Aaron Bearden; and live musical performances by Bearden, Lister and Denise Denaro. The evening is free and open to the public. Floriopolis is at 1131 Beck Ave. in Panama City. Lister will present his newest novel, Out for Blood, the latest installment in the ongoing John Jordan Mystery series, as well as A Dark Radiant Rain, which launched a new series for him earlier this year. Lister said of the former, It not only has more twists and turns but more gut-wrenching emotion and meaningful stakes than any John Jordan title in a long time  maybe ever.

Teens near Panama City Florida film bear swimming by their boat

Look at the bear we just found in East Bay, look at that, he says in the first seconds of the video, his boat cruising slowly behind the bear, which is swimming away toward a mainland and a neighborhood. At six seconds in, the bear clearly notices Braxton and Johnson, both 14, and two seconds later it is turning toward them. As Braxton marvels, Look how cool that is, at the 10-second mark, the bear has completed its turn and has adjusted its bearings toward the boat. A second later, Braxton says OK, let me get a little bit away,  as the engine revs and, but that is awesome, as the boat safely puts some distance between it and the wayward bear.

Panama City Florida police search for armed robbery suspect

The News Herald/USA TODAY NETWORK The News Herald PANAMA CITY Panama City police are searching for a man who robbed a service station at gunpoint Friday evening. According to a Panama City Police Department press release, the suspect, a Black male possibly in his 50s, between 11:40 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., entered the Express Lane at the intersection of W. 11th Street and brandished a firearm. The suspect demanded the clerk open the cash register while he held his gun to her side. The clerk complied and the suspect collected an unknown amount of cash before fleeing on foot.
