By Erica Wright Apostle Wanda Stephen knows the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence. Stephen, pastor of Jesus Real International Ministry, and founder of Mothers Who Want the Violence to Stop, lost her son, George Powell Jr., 15 years ago when he was only 23. “I’ve been fighting out here ever since,” said Stephen on Wednesday at the Homer E. Hayes Soccer Complex in the 200 block of Glen Crest Drive in Fairfield where a shooting occurred Tuesday night. “I want to tell the community you need to put the guns down and pick up the Word of God,” she said. “I am so tired of this going on. . . not just in Fairfield but Birmingham and Bessemer and I have gone all around doing vigils and funerals and my heart goes out to a lot of mothers who have lost their children due to gun violence.”

24-year-old woman killed in Bessemer shooting

24-year-old woman killed in Bessemer shooting Updated 7:08 AM; The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Shunquesha Dale Patton. She lived in Bessemer. The shooting happened at 10:36 p.m. Monday on Seventh Street South between Hall Avenue and McAdory Avenue. Patton was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:02 p.m. Authorities said Patton was killed during a reported domestic argument.  No additional details were immediately available. Elderly Man and Wife Killed in Fire at Birmingham Home

Alabama News BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – An 88-year-old man and his 95-year-old wife have been identified as the victims of a Birmingham house fire. Eunice Johnson Grubbs, and her husband, John Fletcher Grubbs, were identified Monday by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as the two victims discovered in the fire. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service officials say firefighters began to put out a fire at a home on Friday night and found two people inside. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
