BIRMINGHAM, Ala. A Birmingham police officer who was shot in the line-of-duty more than 25 years ago has died.
It was March 22, 1995 when Officer Randy Smith and other officers were called to a 3 a.m. domestic dispute. Smith was a morning-shift patrol officer at the West Precinct of the Birmingham Police Department with seven years experience. He had already accrued several commendations when he responded to the domestic incident in which a toddler had been left inside the house with an angry gunman, AL.com reported.
Smith went inside, grabbed the child and rushed to safety. However, on his way out he encountered an unexpected form of danger. His partner, Sgt. Ronnie Hull, heard the commotion and was headed for the door when the two nearly collided and Hull’s gun discharged, according to the official police investigation.
Man and woman killed in separate New Year’s Day crashes in western Jefferson County

A man and a woman were killed in separate traffic crashes early New Year’s Day in western Jefferson County.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Deandre Martez Chambers, 26, of Bessemer, and Pamela Deanne Donahoo, 53, also of Bessemer.
The first happened shortly after 2 a.m. Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 1000 block of Eastern Valley Road to investigate reports that a vehicle had veered off the roadway and struck a home.
Once there, they found Chambers inside of the vehicle. He was removed from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene, said Sgt. Joni Money. No one in the home was injured.
JEFFERSON COUNTY The new year in Jefferson County began with two traffic fatalities in separate crashes overnight.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Joni Money said shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday, January 1, 2021 Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the 1000 Block of Eastern Valley Road to investigate reports that a vehicle had slid off the roadway and struck a home.
“Once on the scene, Deputies found a 26-year-old black male inside the vehicle,” Money said. “Once he was removed from the vehicle, it was determined that he was deceased. No one in the home was injured in the incident.”

A former Birmingham, Alabama, police officer who was shot in the head by a fellow officer and permanently disabled in 1995 while on duty has died.
Randall Versie “Randy” Smith, 63, died Monday evening at UAB Hospital after a fall at his residence. Authorities believe the fall was a result of the shooting 25 years ago and are calling it a line-of-duty death. According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Smith fell at his Vestavia Hills home and died at the hospital this week.

BIRMINGHAM A 41-year-old Jasper man was killed Tuesday in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 59/20 in Birmingham.
The victim has been identified as Joseph Matthew Poe. According to a report from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Poe crashed near the Ensley Avenue exit at 12:18 p.m. Tuesday.
Authorities say he was the driver and lone occupant of a Toyota 4Runner traveling southbound at the time of the accident. The vehicle left the roadway and struck the center concrete barrier, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times.
Poe was transported to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
