New Music Friday: 9 albums to stream this week

A Liquid Breakfast is a trap-tinged diary of the rising star’s last 18 months. Written while driving around the suburbs of New Jersey, where Nuna was born and raised, the 10-track project marries rolling 808s and smooth, digitised beats to lyrics that read like journal entries. It’s a harmonious mix that offers us a glimpse into the 22-year-old’s inner world, complete with hushed raps of student life and playful verses about dim sums. Elsewhere, NiNE8 affiliate Biig Piig drops an intimate EP, Mdou Moctar, AKA the shred star of the Sahara, releases a new album, and Japanese four-piece CHAI make the ultimate comfort record.

Watch an intimate short film exploring Black British girlhood

“The work reconsiders the figure of alienated working class youth to explore the different facets of ‘coming of age’ for young women living in South London,” she explains. “With this film, I’m in direct conversation with others who talk about the tensions within the solidarity of Black womanhood. I use hair, a very significant touchstone and marker of identity, to explore how we often bury the needs of others.” Realised as part of New Creatives, supported by Arts Council England and BBC Arts, and in collaboration with ICA and Dazed, Blue Corridor 15 presents teen friendship in all its messy, and sometimes volatile, glory. Below, Lanipekun discusses directing her debut short over lockdown, drawing on personal experiences, and the joy of Black sisterhood.

Watch a 12-year-old Gaza rapper sing about the violence in Palestine

Violence erupted in Palestine at the end of April, but has escalated significantly over the past two weeks. At the time of writing, over 227 Palestinians have been killed, including 64 children. People around the world have taken to the streets in protest against Israel’s colonisation of Palestine, calling for freedom for the state. Among those taking part in demonstrations are Bella and Gigi Hadid, who are of Palestinian heritage. Unlike many celebrities, who have steered clear of taking sides, the sisters have shared information about the plight of those living under occupation. In an attempt to twist the narrative, the Israeli government accused Bella and Gigi of antisemitism – an allegation that was widely mocked by those online.
