On Memorial Day, our nation honors military service members who have given their lives for our country. As former President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men [and women] have died to win them.
This is why families, friends, and communities come together to remember the great sacrifices of our military members and ensure their legacies live on.
The benefits the Social Security Administration provides can help the surviving families of deceased military service members. For example, widows, widowers, and their dependent children may be eligible for Social Security survivors benefits. You can learn more about those benefits at www.ssa.gov/survivors.

Chad Phillips spent last Sunday duck hunting in Lauderdale County with a group of fellow veterans. A few participants were duck hunting for the first time.
“You could see the spark in their eyes when they shot their first duck,” Phillips said. “Like ‘Aw man, I’m hooked.’ ”
And just like that, another veteran found peace in the outdoors. This is the mission of The Fallen Outdoors, a non-profit which organizes adventures for veterans and active duty service members. Chapters are spread out across the country, from Oregon to Tennessee.
Phillips, who lives in Montgomery County, wants to introduce the outdoors to more veterans, or help them return to hunting, fishing and other activities. He believes it’s an ideal fit for men and women that served in the military. A great environment to get to know others that saw and experienced similar things; things they don’t always feel comfortable talking about to others.
