Last year’s National Nurses Week theme “The Year of the Nurse” continues for 2021, with front-line nurse caregivers fighting to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic that began in early 2020. Then, as a winter storm hit in February this year, Texas nurses were confronted with the great challenge of power outages and water shortages but still rose to the challenge to provide top care for their patients.
Nurses Week, May 6-12, 2021, brings to light a year that demanded changes in safety protocols throughout the medical community, such as remote telehealth patient visits, visitor limitations and masking requirements. Tribeca, founded by actor Robert DeNiro, is one of the largest and most renowned film festivals in the nation.
For two decades, Tribeca has showcased storytellers from around the world who have used art to inspire positive change and introduced audiences to new forms of storytelling, according to the festival’s website.
Lizzy Guitreau, who earned a bachelor’s degree in 2014, and Robert Todd Campbell, who earned an MFA in 2009, are producers on the film, “Shapeless.” The film premieres outdoors on June 12.
Silver & Blue magazine is headed to your mailbox and is available around campus.
Our cover story features University of New Orleans student Samira Bechara, a dual French and international studies major, who created a culinary outreach project called Le Beirut to raise money for the victims of the Aug. 4, 2020 explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. Bechara’s father was born in Beirut and she spent summers visiting relatives there.
Speaking of outreach, you also can read about alumnus Henry Singer, a retired engineer, who has created a scholarship for UNO students looking to major in engineering or the sciences. Singer, who worked his way through UNO, says he understands some of the financial challenges students face.
