Lettuce grow: Belton indoor farm plans expansion

BELTON — A massive indoor lettuce farm in Belton is about to get much larger. TrueHarvest Farms, a 54,000-square-foot hydroponic greenhouse, is planning a 3.5-acre indoor addition that will more than quadruple annual production. “We’re going to break ground on the new greenhouse in July,” said Marshall McDaniel, one of the owners of the farm. “We will be able grow about 8 million heads of lettuce every year.” That’s a lot of salad! All of the produce is grown hydroponically and free of pesticides. The expansion will allow TrueHarvest to expand its product line and reach new customers through service contracts and supermarkets.

Early voting gets underway Monday for the Harker Heights municipal election, which will take place May 1. Two seats on the Harker Heights City Council are up for election on the ballot, with two candidates vying for the Place 2 seat and four seeking the Place 5 seat. In the Place 2 race, incumbent Michael Blomquist faces a challenge from Howard “Scot” Arey. In Place 5, incumbent Jody Nicholas is term-limited, and four residents are seeking to take her place on the council dais. The candidates are Vitalis Dubininkas, Sam Halabi, Jeffrey Keith Harris and Stacey L. Wilson. Here are some brief biographies of the candidates, in alphabetical order, by council race, followed by a question asking each candidate what they see as the top three issues facing the city.

Temple ISD, other Bell districts plan in-person graduation ceremonies

School districts in Bell County are making plans for in-person graduation ceremonies — festivities that largely span the Bell County Expo Center, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and other venues. Temple Independent School District spokesman Christian Hernandez told the Telegram that Temple High seniors will don their cap and gowns on May 12 at the Bell County Expo Center, 301 W. Loop 121 in Belton. The in-person graduation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. “Each graduate will receive six tickets to distribute to friends or family, and all are required to wear masks,” Hernandez said. Killeen ISD Killeen ISD has five senior bodies graduating in late May: Early College High, 2 p.m. on May 27; Killeen High, 6 p.m. on May 27; C.E. Ellison High, 9 a.m. on May 28; Harker Heights High, 2 p.m. on May 28; and Robert M. Shoemaker High, 9 a.m. on May 29.

Kenny Daugherty, president of the search firm, led the assignment. Dr. Mynatt currently serves as vice provost for institutional effectiveness for the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor (UMHB) in Belton, TX. He will begin his term at Pfeiffer University on June 1. Ninety-four people applied for the role. Video conferences were held with 15 semi-finalists, and four finalists came to the campus.
