To round out Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, students from the University of Guam Social Work Program took charge of the Denim Day wave Wednesday with the help of Erica s House and the Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Family Violence.
The Denim Day wave tradition stems from a court case in Italy in which a judge sided with the perpetrator in a rape case. In his ruling, the judge said there must have been consent in the incident since the victim was wearing tight jeans and would have had to have helped her perpetrator take them off.

“Although our candles may not stay lit, the fire burns on in our hearts,” said Camille High, organizer of the “Shatter the Silence” vigil at 16th Street Park. The wind kept blowing out the candles but not the resolve of the attendees.
High, a cofounder of Black in Bayonne, hosted the vigil in honor of sexual assault and domestic violence victims and survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. High holds the event every other year or so to talk about the “uncomfortable subject” and hold space for those affected.
