Sexual Assault Awareness Month kicked off at the beginning of April at the University of Kansas with the theme âWe Can Build Safe Online Spaces,â intended to raise awareness of the fact that sexual assault, harassment and abuse can also happen on online platforms, not just through physical contact.Â
Jen Brockman, director of the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center, said that the educational programs start the awareness conversation on campus. These programs include âJayhawks Give a Flock,â âConsent @ KU,â âSex, Drugs and Alcoholâ and âSexual Violence Recognition and Response.âÂ
âSAPEC provides primary education for sexual violence, intimitate partner violence and stalking,â Brockman said. âWe work with both undergrad and graduate students in a variety of education based programs.

Dove – #NoDigitalDistortion
Perhaps the most powerful campaign this month is Dove’s viral social content focused on widespread use of digital distortion in online images. The brand, which has a lengthy history of promoting diversity and authenticity in beauty, and combatting harmful modern beauty standards, is now centring its content on the next generation – the first to have grown up surrounded by social media from a very young age.
On April 28, the Texas Tech Risk Intervention and Safety Education (RISE) office partnered with the Tech Panhellenic Council to host the annual Take Back the Night event for sexual assault survivors and their allies.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and every year RISE hosts this event for survivors of sexual assault and those that support them to come together to share their voices and experiences.
In years past, the event has included poster making and a march down Broadway in Lubbock, a circle to share experiences and a candlelight vigil, Brittany Todd, the RISE director, said. This year, due to COVID-19 regulations, the event consisted of student speakers and an address from Todd at Memorial Circle on Techâs campus.

Sexual Assault Awareness month takes place every April, and one Stockton non-profit chose a unique theme to raise awareness about the issue.
Women s Center-Youth & Family Services (WCYFS), located at 620 N San Joaquin St in Stockton, describe themselves as San Joaquin County s primary provider of free, confidential services and shelters specifically designed to meet the needs of homeless and runaway youth and victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking, according to their official website.
Every year, WCYFS creates a Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign to bring more attention to what they call a widespread issue.
