The rescuers tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Embry, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Burns was semi-conscious and having difficulty breathing when he was pulled from the water, his mother said. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
When his vital signs became unstable on Sunday night, Antonio Burns was put on a ventilator. He was taken off of the ventilator on Monday night and on Tuesday was scheduled to have an X-ray to see whether there was any water remaining in his lungs. Overall, we re praying for a full recovery, Asteria Burns said, but I know mentally this is something that he is going to have to deal with.
With COVID-19 vaccines still in high demand, New Hanover County health officials say they’ve thrown out less than five doses of the vaccine. That’s compared to almost 50,000 administered by the public health department.
Overall, North Carolina has had to throw out around 5,700 vaccines out of more than 4 million received, said Bailey Pennington, communications specialist for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
The state department recommends no vaccine doses be wasted, and encourages local health departments to have an on call list of those available to receive a vaccine to ensure doses are administered if there are any leftovers due to no-show or cancelled appointments.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - YWCA Lower Cape Fear is hosting its Stand Against Racism: Addressing Racism as a Public Health Crisis event Thursday, April 22.

The event is free to the community.
“In this virtual event, our featured speaker, Elizabeth Barfield-Forte, Health Equity Specialist, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and panel of community leaders will address how we can implement public health practices to effectively identify and address racial injustice in our communities,” the YWCA Lower Cape Fear said in a new release.
A 37-year-old motorist died early Tuesday in a single-vehicle fatal crash in the 1200 block of Market Street.
According to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department, James Antwain Rogers was driving west in a 2015 Ford Fusion around 2:16 a.m. before losing control of the car. The vehicle struck a fire hydrant and a tree.
Rogers was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and later died due to his injuries.
The department’s traffic unit is investigating the accident.
“We offer our deepest condolences to all affected by this tragic case,” officials stated in a news release.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A 37-year-old man died from injuries suffered in an early morning wreck Tuesday, according to the Wilmington Police Department.
According to a WPD Facebook post, the wreck took place at 2:16 a.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Market Street.
“A 2015 Ford Fusion was traveling westbound on Market St. when the driver lost control of the vehicle,” the post states. “The vehicle then struck a fire hydrant and a tree, the driver was ejected from the vehicle. There was only one vehicle involved.”
