Lowcountry school boards weigh in on governorâs mask order

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - School districts around the Lowcountry are reacting to Governor Henry McMasterâs order that the requires districts to allow parents to opt-out of the schoolâs mask requirements.
Justin Farnsworth is a school board member in Dorchester School District 2. He says there were rumblings that an order was coming, but they were given no warning before the announcement was made.
âThe order that came out was, I donât want to say, a shocker but just something we were not fully ready for or expecting yesterday,â Farnsworth said.

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Berkeley County School District says they are one step closer to naming a new superintendent.
Dr. Glenda Gibson Levine will be meeting with community members at a 4 p.m. reception in the board room of the school district’s headquarters, the BCSD says.
Additionally, those interested can meet Dr. Anthony Dixon at the same time Tuesday and candidate Deon Jackson at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
A new superintendent is expected to be named by the end of the month, the BCSD says.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - With the end of the school year a little over a month away, students and families are reminded that itâs now a federal requirement for all virtual students to take state-mandated testing in person.
This includes End-Of-Course exams, SC READY, and SC PASS tests.
Dorchester District Two says when parents signed their virtual learning contracts they agreed their students would come in-person to take these state mandated tests.

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - A Lowcountry mother is suing the Berkeley County School District saying district officials are breaking the law by not allowing her two children to be enrolled for in-person classes.
The lawsuit, which also names BCSD Superintendent Eddie Ingram, is suing for violation of the governor’s orders and constitutional right to education. The suit is seeking damages for lost wages, childcare expenses, and for lost educational opportunities.
