Father charged with homicide in death of 2-month-old in Milwaukee

A 20-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide after telling police he shook his 2-month-old son more than a day before he died of blunt force trauma to the head. If convicted, Jakob Ivy faces up to 60 years in prison, according to court documents. He is in the Milwaukee County Jail with cash bail set at $5,000. His son has been identified as Kai Ivy by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. He died in the early morning of April 26 after his father reported he was unresponsive and not breathing, police said. First responders were able to locate a pulse, but he died after being hospitalized.

A dog was an apparent passenger on the vehicle, but was uninjured and released to family. A passerby saw the incident on Monroe Rd near La Follette Rd, about 7-8 miles northeast of Watertown. The initial investigation indicated the UTV was northbound on Monroe Rd, left the roadway on the right shoulder, and overturned in a marshy ditch, ejecting the driver.

A Milwaukee pastor who lived up to his favorite phrase You don t throw people away will be remembered for launching a jobs initiative that helped hundreds find employment. Pastor Jerome Smith, 49, overcame childhood poverty and a suicide attempt as a young man, then devoted himself to helping others get back on their feet. He led the Joseph Project from his church on Milwaukee s north side since 2015. The faith-based program connects adults from central-city neighborhoods, especially those who are formerly incarcerated, with job opportunities in the region, and provides transportation and training. Smith died Tuesday, April 27, from complications of COVID-19. It’s just really hard for me right now to put to words how much he meant to so many people, said Orlando Owens, a Milwaukee minister and aide for Sen. Ron Johnson who partnered with Smith to create the program.  So many people he touched and supported.
