BANNING, CA A man suspected of fatally stabbing a father and wounding his juvenile son nearly five years ago in Banning has been arrested, Banning police announced Wednesday.
Jerry Anthony Valdepena, 24, was taken into custody Friday in Hemet and was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, jail records show.
He was due in court Wednesday.

According to Banning police, officers were called to the 400 Block of Alessandro Road in Banning around 12:47 a.m. June 5, 2016. At the location, they found Jeremy Frank Cooley, 26, and his juvenile son suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Thomas Zaragoza, 39, of Desert Hot Springs is charged with one count each of attempted murder, assault with a gun, assault on a person causing great bodily injury and criminal street gang activity. He also faces several gun- and gang-related sentence-enhancing allegations. He faces a maximum life sentence if convicted as charged.

Opening statements are set for Monday for the trial of a reputed gang member accused in a 2017 shooting at a Cathedral City bar that left a man severely injured.
Thomas Zaragoza, 39, of Desert Hot Springs, is accused of opening fire on Mike Avila after an argument that erupted at what was The Block Sports Bar & Grill at Ramon Road and Date Palm Drive on July 26, 2017. The business is now known as Henry s Sports Bar & Grill.

A La Quinta man accused of stabbing a Riverside County sheriff s deputy in the leg during a scuffle in Palm Desert pleaded not guilty today to two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer and other felony charges.
Christian Matthew Choi, 50, was arrested March 30 in the area of El Paseo and Lupine Lane following the alleged altercation that left the deputy with a non-life-threatening stab wound.

Along with attempted murder on a peace officer, Choi faces charges of robbery, resisting an executive officer and assault with a deadly weapon, along with several weapon and great bodily injury sentence-enhancing allegations.

Arraignment is scheduled Wednesday for a La Quinta man accused of stabbing a Riverside County sheriff s deputy in the leg during a scuffle in Palm Desert.
Christian Matthew Choi, 50, is charged with 10 felony counts, including two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer. He also faces charges of robbery, resisting an executive officer and assault with a deadly weapon, along with several weapon and great bodily injury sentence-enhancing allegations.
Choi, who remains jailed on $1 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside, is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. He made his initial court appearance Tuesday but did not enter a plea.
