Post-holiday COVID-19 uptick in deaths; cases on S.I. persist into 2021

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The coronavirus (COVID-19) has claimed the lives of 18 more Staten Islanders since Wednesday, while an average of 467 residents have tested positive each of the past three days, according to data collected by the New York City Department of Health.
Those numbers reflect a notable uptick, compared to the week of Christmas. Health experts across the U.S. had predicted a surge in cases due to holiday gatherings.
DEATHS
City health officials on Wednesday reported a daily total of 10 coronavirus deaths after a total of 23 deaths were reported over the course of six days prior to that.

John and Lauren Cipriano of Huguenot welcomed their second baby girl, Valentina, on Christmas Day 2020. Her big sister, Marialina, was born two years ago on Christmas Eve.

In a year like no other, John and Lauren Cipriano are counting their blessings as their second little bundle of joy arrived on Christmas Day. And, two years ago, the couple welcomed their first child on Christmas Eve.
Valentina was welcomed into the world at 3:17 p.m. last Thursday Christmas Day, just as her big sister Marialina had turned 2 the day before. The new baby was born at Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces, and measuring 20 inches.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. It was a time like no other. The year 2020 will be forever remembered for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic with the global crisis hitting New York City in March, bringing with it sorrow and tragedy of unparalleled proportions. Yet, Staten Islanders showed and continue to demonstrate amazing resilience through it all.
The Advance/SILive.com was able to publish some incredible images of hope throughout the year.
As we combed through the photos some taken by our photographers, others submitted to us we found so much to be grateful for over the past 12 months. Moments such as 11 newborn babies pictured together prior to the pandemic, a 60-year-old coronavirus patient being released from the hospital, and, of course, small acts of kindness.
