Following the holidays, COVID-19 cases surge on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. State health officials have noted a post-holiday spike in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, which appears to include Staten Island, where positive cases reported by the city have increased by 447 from Monday to Tuesday.
The increase is dramatic in a month that has seen surging cases on the borough, and hospitalization numbers for COVID-19 that had not been seen since spring.
As of Tuesday, 29,772 positive tests have been recorded across the borough since March, reflecting the 447 new cases.
From Sunday to Monday, 224 new cases were reported.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A suspect allegedly left a loaded gun behind when he ran away after blowing a stop sign and crashing his sedan into a pickup truck that was carrying a small child.
Cops: Man, 20, wounded in drive-by shooting in Clifton; shooter remains at large

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A 20-year-old man was shot and injured when a gun was fired from a car in Clifton on Sunday night, according to police.
The drive-by shooting occurred at about 9:58 p.m. in front of an apartment building at 55 Bowen St., according to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
The 20-year-old man was shot in the left thigh and he was taken in stable condition to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton, according to the police spokesman.
15 more COVID-19 deaths since mid-week, patient count down at one hospital

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Since mid-week, another 15 Staten Islanders reportedly died of coronavirus (COVID-19) complications, the latest city Health Department data shows.
In total, health officials say 1,253 confirmed and probable fatalities on Staten Island had been recorded since the start of the pandemic.
All of the deaths reported since Wednesday fall in the “confirmed” category, while the number of “probable” deaths remains at 195, data shows.
A death is classified as “probable” if the decedent was a city resident who had no known positive laboratory test for the coronavirus, but the death certificate lists “COVID-19” or an equivalent as a cause of death.
