Sex offender released in Stevens Point

By Liz Holbrook Jan 21, 2021 7:02 PM STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) A man convicted for multiple child pornography charges has reached the end of his prison sentence. A release from the Stevens Point Police Department says Scott Szerlong is being released from prison on January 21st, 2021. Szerlong was convicted on 18 counts of possession of child pornography in 2017 in Portage County. He was also convicted on fraud and drug charges in 2017 as well. Szerlong will live at 1504 Waters St. in Stevens Point and will be on strict supervision with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. He is being monitored by Sex Offender Agent Specialists and is subject to lifelong GPS monitoring. Szerlong is not allowed to have any unsupervised contact with minors, and must comply with standard sex offender rules including electronic monitoring and lifetime registry on the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry.

Almost 1.6 million Wisconsinites  including teachers, grocery store workers and prisoners could be eligible for the coronavirus vaccine in the next phase of the rollout, which goes to the state health department for a final decision this week.  The State Disaster Medical Advisory Committee voted unanimously to pass its recommendations to the state health department Wednesday morning.  The state Department of Health Services has already opened the second round of vaccinations, known as Phase 1B, to people 65 and older and fire and police personnel.

The State of Wisconsin’s two youth prisons are supposed to close this summer, but the state has failed to move forward, or fund, plans for new facilities, and now the deadline can’t be met, as Urban Milwaukee has reported.  The prisons Lincoln Hills School for Boys and Copper Lake School for Girls were the subject of a federal investigation after allegations of abuses suffered there came to light. The abuses and the federal investigation led to calls in the state to close the facilities and to reform the system.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections has released total death tolls due to COVID-19 at the prison facilities where the deaths occurred. To date, at least 25 prisoners have died from COVID-19 in Wisconsin; previously, the DOC has refused to release information about what facilities have had inmates die because of COVID-19. Oshkosh and Waupun Correctional Institutions lead the list with four inmate deaths each. Stanley and Redgranite Correctional Institutions have each reported three inmate deaths; facilities at Racine, Fox Lake and Dodge have each reported two deaths.
