Retired Judge Virgil Smith plans run for Detroit council seat
Correction: Virgil K. Smith is the son and an adviser of retired Judge Virgil C. Smith. His name was incorrect in an earlier version of this story.
Retired Wayne County Circuit Judge Virgil C. Smith is preparing to run for a Detroit City Council seat in a campaign where his son, a former state senator who struck a plea deal, is one of his key advisers.
Smith, who served 14 years on the Wayne County Circuit Court bench, including four years as chief judge, said he plans soon to announce his candidacy for the District 4 seat, but it depends on what council member Andre Spivey plans to do.
The Wayne County Prosecutor s Office said Monday it is dismissing all adjudicated and pending cases related to the governor s pandemic emergency orders after the Michigan Supreme Court deemed them unconstitutional.
The announcement comes a week after the City of Detroit s decision to dismiss dozens of its misdemeanor citations from the police brutality protests this summer, and after months of high-profile murder exonerations throughout the state.
Earlier this year, the court ruled Gov. Gretchen Whitmer didn t have authority to issue the emergency orders after April 30. The decision, the prosecutor s office said, undercut the legal basis for nearly 1,800 cases and, as a result, those have been dismissed.

Raymond Jones-Watson, 32, and Derrick Boozer, 29, were charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm.
The shooting occurred around 8:15 p.m. Jan. 19 at a location in the 8530 block of Wildemere on Detroit s west side after an ongoing dispute. The gunfire killed a 32-year-old man and wounded his 34-year-old brother, who is expected to survive.
Attorneys for Rick Snyder say Flint water prosecutors have acknowledged they did not use a special “taint” or “filter” team in the course of their investigation of the former governor and are asking a Genesee District Court judge to stop the clock on certain filing deadlines until after their motion to dismiss the indictments is decided.
A 44-year-old Detroit woman has been charged with stabbing her husband with a sword, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Wednesday.
Reanetta Moore is accused of the non-fatal stabbing of Robert Joiner, 35. Authorities say the couple was in the basement of their home in the 9100 block of Montrose around 6:30 a.m. Sunday when they had an argument and Moore allegedly grabbed a sword and cut her husband several times. He sustained serious injuries.
Police said the incident was a domestic situation but did not elaborate on the argument that preceded the sword attack.
Moore is charged with assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felonious assault and aggravated assault. She was arraigned Wednesday in 36th District Court in Detroit and given a $1 million cash bond by Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath.
