VISTA — A Vista man who gunned down his girlfriend in front of families spending a Sunday afternoon at a pool was sentenced Tuesday to 80 years to life in prison. Vista Superior Court Judge Robert Kearney handed the maximum sentence to Esteban Montelongo, 43, who was convicted of murder in the July 2018 shooting death of Michelle Hashtani. The two had been arguing in their shared apartment in the complex on Ascot Drive near North Melrose Drive when Hashtani called a friend to come pick her up, telling the friend that Montelongo had choked her, according to court documents filed by the prosecution.
